Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of equine-assisted psychotherapy, including how horses can help people manage anxiety. The student will also learn about the emotional connection between humans and horses and how this bond can be therapeutic.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a safe outdoor space or a virtual tour of a stable
  • Basic knowledge of horse behavior (research beforehand if needed)
  • Open mind and willingness to engage with the topic

Activities

  • Horse Behavior Observation:

Spend some time watching horses, either in person or through a video. Take notes on their behavior and how they interact with each other and humans. Discuss what you observe and how these behaviors might relate to emotions and anxiety.

  • Creative Expression:

Draw or create a collage of what you think a therapeutic session with a horse would look like. Use images and words that represent feelings of calmness, safety, and connection.

  • Role-Playing Exercise:

Imagine you are a therapist using horses for therapy. Write a short script on how you would introduce a horse to someone experiencing anxiety. Consider what you would say to help them feel comfortable.

  • Reflection Journal:

At the end of the lesson, write a reflection on what you learned about equine-assisted therapy. Include your thoughts on how horses can help with anxiety and any personal feelings you have about the topic.
