Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply basic math skills to plan a successful party, including budgeting, calculating quantities, and understanding proportions for food and decorations.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for calculations
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Party planning scenario (create a fictional party with a budget, guest list, and theme)
  • Access to basic math formulas (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Activities

  • Budgeting Challenge:

    Provide a fictional budget for the party. The student will list out potential expenses (food, decorations, entertainment) and calculate how much they can spend on each item while staying within budget.

  • Guest List Math:

    Have the student create a guest list with a set number of guests. They will calculate how much food and drinks are needed based on a standard serving size per person.

  • Decoration Proportions:

    Ask the student to choose a theme and calculate how many decorations (balloons, streamers, etc.) are needed based on the size of the party space and the number of guests.
