Objective

By the end of this lesson, Fletcher will have a better understanding of sharks, including their habitats, behaviors, and the importance of their role in the ocean ecosystem. He will also create a fun project that showcases his knowledge about sharks.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper for drawing and writing
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • A timer (optional, for timed activities)
  • A comfortable space to work

Before the lesson, it might be helpful to think about some specific types of sharks Fletcher is interested in, like the Great White or Hammerhead, to focus on during the activities.

Activities

  • Shark Research:

Fletcher will choose one type of shark to research. He will write down interesting facts about this shark, such as its size, diet, and where it lives. This will help him learn more about the specific characteristics of different sharks.

  • Shark Drawing:

Using the facts he gathered, Fletcher will create a colorful drawing of his chosen shark. He can include details like its habitat and any other sea creatures that live nearby.

  • Shark Role Play:

Fletcher can pretend to be a shark for a few minutes! He can act out how a shark swims, hunts, and interacts with other sea life. This activity will help him understand shark behavior in a fun way.

  • Shark Conservation Discussion:

Fletcher will learn about why sharks are important to the ocean ecosystem. He can think about ways to help protect sharks and their habitats, discussing what he can do to make a difference.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that there are over 500 different species of sharks? Some are tiny, like the dwarf lantern shark, and others are huge, like the whale shark!"
