Objective

By the end of this lesson, Anne-marie will be able to connect concepts from Art, English, History, Math, Music, and Social Studies through the lens of Minecraft. She will create a mini-project that showcases her understanding of these subjects in a fun and engaging way.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers for drawing
  • A notebook for writing
  • A computer or tablet with Minecraft installed (optional for additional exploration)
  • Access to a history or encyclopedia website for research
  • Musical instruments (if available) or access to music apps

Before the lesson, make sure Anne-marie is familiar with the basic mechanics of Minecraft, such as building and crafting. It may also be helpful to have some fun Minecraft trivia ready to spark interest!

Activities

  • Build a Historical Landmark:

Using Minecraft, have Anne-marie choose a historical landmark (like the Great Wall of China or the Eiffel Tower) and recreate it. She can then present her creation and share interesting facts about the landmark.

  • Write a Minecraft Adventure Story:

Encourage Anne-marie to write a short story where she is the main character in a Minecraft world. She can include quests, challenges, and fun characters she meets along the way.

  • Create a Musical Minecraft Theme:

Have Anne-marie compose a short tune that she thinks fits her Minecraft adventure. She can use any instruments she has or even create a rhythm with household items.

  • Artistic Expression:

After completing her Minecraft builds, encourage Anne-marie to draw her favorite scene or character from her Minecraft adventure using colored pencils or markers.

  • Math in Minecraft:

Have Anne-marie calculate the area of her Minecraft builds or the number of blocks used in her creations. This will help her practice her math skills in a fun way!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that many historical landmarks are made from specific materials? What materials will you use in your Minecraft build?"
  • "Writing a story is like building in Minecraft; you create a world and fill it with characters and adventures! What will happen in your story?"
  • "Music can set the mood for your Minecraft adventures. How do you think different sounds can change the way you feel while playing?"
  • "Art is all around us, even in games! What colors and shapes will you use to make your Minecraft world beautiful?"
  • "Math helps us understand the world, even in Minecraft! Can you count how many blocks you used in your build?"
