Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will learn how to make pancakes while exploring concepts in English, History, Math, Physical Education, Science, and Social Studies. The student will understand the ingredients needed, the cooking process, and the fun of sharing food with others.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons of melted butter
  • A mixing bowl
  • A whisk or spoon
  • A frying pan or skillet
  • A spatula

Before starting, make sure to have a clean workspace and remind the student to wash their hands. Discuss the importance of each ingredient and how they work together to make pancakes.

Activities

  • Reading a Recipe:

    Start by reading a simple pancake recipe together. This will help the student practice their reading skills while learning about the ingredients.

  • Measuring Ingredients:

    Let the student measure out the ingredients using cups and spoons. This will involve counting and understanding measurements, which ties into math.

  • Mixing the Batter:

    Have the student mix the ingredients together in the bowl. This is a great way to practice fine motor skills and learn about combining ingredients.

  • Cooking the Pancakes:

    With adult supervision, allow the student to pour the batter onto the frying pan. Discuss the importance of heat and cooking as a science experiment.

  • Pancake Art:

    Encourage the student to create fun shapes or designs with the pancake batter while cooking. This can enhance their creativity and make the learning process enjoyable.

  • Sharing the Pancakes:

    Once the pancakes are cooked, encourage the student to share them with family members. Discuss the importance of sharing food and enjoying meals together.
