Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of money, specifically coins and bills, and how to make change accurately. The student will also develop practical skills for calculating totals and providing change in various scenarios.

Materials and Prep

  • Play money (coins and bills) - can be homemade or printed
  • Calculator (optional for checking work)
  • Notebook and pen for notes
  • Whiteboard or large paper for visual aids
  • Timer for timed activities

Before the lesson, ensure that the play money is organized and that the student understands the values of different coins and bills. Familiarity with basic arithmetic will be beneficial.

Activities

  • Money Match Game: Create a matching game where the student pairs different coins with their corresponding values. This will help reinforce their knowledge of coin values in a fun and interactive way.

  • Make Change Challenge: Set up various scenarios where the student must calculate the correct change to give back after a purchase. Use different amounts and encourage the student to do this both mentally and with their play money.

  • Shopping Simulation: Create a mock store where the student can "purchase" items using play money. Provide a list of prices and allow the student to practice making change. This real-life simulation will enhance their comfort with handling money.

  • Quick Calculations Race: Time the student as they calculate totals and change for a series of transactions. This activity adds a competitive element and helps improve their speed and accuracy.
