Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of laundry, including sorting clothes, washing techniques, and the importance of cleanliness. The student will also learn some fun facts about the history of laundry and basic math concepts involved in measuring detergent.

Materials and Prep

  • Assorted clean laundry items (e.g., shirts, pants, towels)
  • Measuring cup or spoon for detergent
  • Access to a washing machine (if available) or a bucket for a pretend wash
  • Water (for pretend washing if not using a machine)
  • Timer (can be a phone or any timer available)

Before the lesson, make sure the student understands what laundry is and has seen a washing machine in action. Discuss any previous experiences they may have had with laundry tasks.

Activities

  • Sorting Game:

Have the student sort the laundry into different piles based on color (whites, colors, darks) or type (shirts, pants, towels). This will help them understand the importance of sorting before washing.

  • Measuring Detergent:

Teach the student how to measure detergent using a measuring cup or spoon. Explain why it's important to use the right amount. You can even create a fun "detergent dance" while doing this!

  • Washing Time:

If you have a washing machine, let the student help load it. If not, set up a pretend wash in a bucket. Let them splash water and pretend to wash the clothes while singing a laundry song!

  • Laundry History:

Share some fun facts about how people used to wash clothes before washing machines were invented. You can create a story together about a day in the life of a laundry worker from the past.

  • Math Fun:

Use the timer to measure how long it takes to sort laundry or pretend to wash clothes. Ask the student to count how many items they sorted or washed, reinforcing basic counting skills.

Talking Points

  • "Why do we sort our clothes before washing?"
  • "Can you tell me how much detergent we need? Let's measure it together!"
  • "What do you think washing clothes was like before washing machines? Let's imagine!"
  • "How many shirts did we wash today? Let's count them!"
  • "What happens if we mix colors in the wash? Can you guess?"
  • "Why is it important to have clean clothes? How does it make us feel?"
