Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify the six states and two territories of Australia, as well as some famous landmarks in each region. They will also develop a deeper appreciation for Australia's geography and culture.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • A map of Australia (can be drawn or printed)
  • Access to the internet (optional for research)
  • Basic knowledge of Australia’s geography (states, territories, and landmarks)

Activities

  • Map Creation: The student will create their own map of Australia, labeling each state and territory. They can use different colors to represent each area and include notable landmarks.

  • Landmark Research: The student will pick two states or territories and research one famous landmark from each. They will write a short paragraph about the landmark, including its history and significance.

  • State Trivia Game: The student will create a trivia game with questions about each state and territory, such as capital cities, famous landmarks, and unique facts. They can quiz a family member or friend!

  • Creative Presentation: The student will prepare a short presentation (3-5 minutes) about one state or territory of their choice, including its landmarks, culture, and any interesting facts they learned.

  • "South Australia is known for its wine regions. What do you think makes a place famous for its food or drink?"
