Objective

By the end of this lesson, Lilli will be able to identify and describe different geometric shapes, understand their properties, and apply her knowledge to solve fun geometry-related puzzles and problems.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for drawing and notes
  • Ruler for measuring lines and creating shapes
  • Protractor for measuring angles
  • Colored pencils or markers for coloring shapes
  • Access to a computer or tablet (optional) for online geometry games

Before starting the lesson, make sure Lilli is familiar with basic geometric terms like point, line, and angle. A brief review of these concepts will help her during the activities.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt:

Lilli will go on a "shape hunt" around the house or yard to find real-life examples of geometric shapes. She will take notes and draw pictures of each shape she finds.

  • Build a Shape Book:

Using the paper and colored pencils, Lilli will create a "Geometry Book" where she can illustrate different shapes, label their properties (like sides and angles), and provide examples of where she sees them in everyday life.

  • Angle Estimation Game:

Lilli will use a protractor to measure angles around her home. She will estimate the angles first and then check her estimates with the protractor, noting how close she was.

  • Geometry Puzzles:

Using her knowledge of shapes, Lilli will create simple puzzles for herself or someone else to solve. For example, she can draw a shape and ask how many sides it has or what type of angle it contains.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes a shape a shape? Is it the number of sides, or something else?"
  • "Can you think of a time when you saw a triangle or a square in real life? Shapes are all around us!"
  • "When we measure angles, why do you think it’s important to be accurate? How can it help us in real-life situations?"
  • "Let's think about how we can classify shapes. What makes a rectangle different from a square?"
  • "Why do you think geometry is important? How do you think architects and engineers use geometry in their work?"
