Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic skills to solve math problems using Legos.
Materials and Prep
- Legos (various sizes and colors)
- Math notebook or paper
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of addition and subtraction.
Activities
- Counting and Sorting Legos
- Addition Tower Challenge
- Subtraction Puzzle
Start by counting and sorting your Legos into different groups based on their colors or sizes. Write down the number of Legos in each group.
Build a tower using Legos. Start with a base of 3 Legos, then add 2 more Legos on top. Count the total number of Legos in the tower and write down the sum.
Build a small structure using Legos. Take away some Legos and count how many are left. Write down the subtraction equation to represent the number of Legos you removed.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Math is all around us, even in our favorite toys like Legos!"
- "When we count and sort our Legos, we are practicing our math skills."
- "Adding Legos together helps us find the total number of Legos in a tower."
- "Taking away Legos from a structure helps us understand subtraction."
- "By using Legos, we can make math more fun and interactive!"
