Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of magnets and their properties.

Materials and Prep

  • A magnet
  • Various objects made of different materials (paperclip, plastic spoon, wooden block, etc.)
  • A piece of string
  • A pencil
  • A sheet of paper

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Explore Magnetism: Start by using the magnet to test the objects and see which ones are attracted to it. Try picking up the paperclip, spoon, and wooden block with the magnet. Observe what happens.
  2. Create a Magnet Fishing Game: Tie the string to the pencil and attach the magnet to the other end of the string. Scatter the paper clips on a table or the floor. Use the magnet fishing rod to "catch" the paper clips. Count how many you can collect.
  3. Magnet Maze: Draw a maze on the sheet of paper using a pencil. Place the magnet underneath the paper and move it around to guide the pencil through the maze. See if you can complete the maze without lifting the magnet.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Magnets are special objects that can attract certain materials like metal."
  • "They have a force called magnetism, which pulls or attracts certain objects towards them."
  • "Some objects, like paperclips, are made of metal and are attracted to magnets."
  • "Other objects, like plastic or wood, are not made of metal and are not attracted to magnets."
  • "We can use magnets to play games, like the magnet fishing game, where we try to catch objects made of metal."
  • "We can also use magnets to do fun activities, like guiding a pencil through a maze without touching it."
  • "Remember, magnets are not toys and should be handled with care."
