Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will learn about dinosaurs, their habitats, and some fun facts from the book "Dinosaurs Before Dark" in the Magic Tree House series. The student will also engage in creative activities to express their understanding of the topic.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- A comfortable reading space
- A timer (optional for activity timing)
Before the lesson, be familiar with the basic story of "Dinosaurs Before Dark" and some fun dinosaur facts to share with the student.
Activities
-
Story Time:
Read "Dinosaurs Before Dark" together. Pause to discuss the story and ask questions about what is happening in the book. This will help the student engage with the characters and plot.
-
Dinosaur Drawing:
After reading, have the student draw their favorite dinosaur from the story. Encourage them to use lots of colors and be creative! Once they finish, they can share their drawing and explain why they chose that dinosaur.
-
Dinosaur Movement Game:
Play a fun game where the student pretends to be different dinosaurs. You can call out a dinosaur name, and they have to move like that dinosaur. For example, "Be a T-Rex!" or "Now be a Brontosaurus!" This will help them learn about how dinosaurs moved.
-
Dinosaur Facts Fun:
Share some interesting dinosaur facts with the student. Then, ask them to pick one fact and create a short story or sentence about it. This will encourage creativity and reinforce their learning.

- "Can you tell me what your dinosaur looks like? What color is it?"
- "Dinosaurs came in all shapes and sizes! Some were really big, and some were very small!"
- "What do you think it would be like to see a dinosaur in real life? Would you be scared or excited?"
