Objective

By the end of this lesson, Nadia will learn how to prepare sweet and sour chicken, cook rice, and understand the concept of mise en place, all while integrating English and Math skills through cooking measurements and vocabulary related to the dish.

Materials and Prep

  • Chicken (breast or thigh, diced)
  • Sweet and sour sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • Rice (white or brown)
  • Vegetables (like bell peppers, onions, and pineapple)
  • Cooking oil
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Pan for cooking
  • Pot for cooking rice
  • Plates and utensils for serving

Before starting the lesson, ensure all ingredients are fresh and accessible. Discuss with Nadia the importance of safety in the kitchen, especially when using knives and heat.

Activities

  • Vocabulary Building:

Nadia will learn key cooking terms such as "mise en place," "dicing," and "sautéing." Create flashcards for each term and practice their meanings.

  • Measuring Ingredients:

Using measuring cups and spoons, Nadia will practice measuring out the ingredients for the sweet and sour chicken and rice. This will help reinforce her math skills in a practical context.

  • Cooking Demonstration:

Guide Nadia through the cooking process step-by-step. She will prepare the mise en place by chopping vegetables and measuring sauces, followed by cooking the chicken and rice.

  • Reflective Writing:

After cooking, Nadia will write a short paragraph about what she learned, including new vocabulary and math concepts used in the lesson.

Talking Points

  • "Mise en place means 'everything in its place.' It’s a French culinary phrase that emphasizes the importance of preparation before cooking."
  • "When measuring ingredients, remember that accuracy is key! For example, if a recipe calls for 1 cup of rice, using too much or too little can change the dish."
  • "Cooking is a great way to practice math. For instance, if we double the recipe, how much of each ingredient do we need?"
  • "Sweet and sour chicken is not just delicious; it also has a balance of flavors. Can you identify the sweet and the sour components in our dish?"
  • "Reflecting on our cooking experience helps us remember what we learned. Writing about it can also improve your English skills!"
