Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to analyze and interpret text while making connections to the popular game Minecraft.

Materials and Prep

  • Minecraft game (if available)
  • Pen and paper

Activities

  1. Read a Minecraft-related story or article together.
  2. Choose a story or article that explores the world of Minecraft, such as a player's experience, a guide to building, or an analysis of the game's impact. Read it aloud or take turns reading.

  3. Create a character analysis.
  4. Discuss the main characters in the story or article. Analyze their traits, motivations, and relationships. Write down your findings on paper, drawing connections between the characters and their actions in the Minecraft world.

  5. Write a Minecraft-inspired story.
  6. Using the characters and setting from the story or article you read, create your own Minecraft-inspired narrative. Think about the challenges the characters face, the goals they strive for, and the lessons they learn. Write a short story that incorporates these elements.

  7. Discuss the themes and messages.
  8. Reflect on the themes and messages conveyed in the Minecraft-related story or article and your own narrative. Discuss how these themes relate to real-life experiences and lessons we can learn.

Talking Points

  • "In Minecraft, players have the freedom to create and explore their own virtual worlds, just like authors have the freedom to create and explore their own fictional worlds in stories."
  • "When analyzing characters, it's important to consider their traits, motivations, and relationships, just like we would when examining the actions and decisions of players in Minecraft."
  • "Writing a Minecraft-inspired story allows us to use our imagination and creativity, just like players use their imagination and creativity to build and design in the game."
  • "Themes and messages in stories can teach us valuable lessons about life, just like Minecraft can teach us about problem-solving, teamwork, and perseverance."
