Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for writing and math exercises
  • Timer or clock for timing cooking activities
  • Simple recipe for roast chicken dinner (written out or verbally explained)
  • Measuring cups and spoons for math activities
  • Access to a kitchen for practical cooking activities (if possible)

Before the lesson, ensure that Nadia is familiar with basic cooking terms and has an understanding of simple addition and subtraction.

Activities

  1. Storytelling Time:

Nadia will create a short story about a chicken roast dinner. She can include characters, a setting, and a plot that revolves around preparing and enjoying the dinner. This will enhance her English language skills.

  2. Ingredient Measurement:

Using the recipe, Nadia will measure out the ingredients needed for the chicken roast dinner. This activity will help her practice her measuring skills and understand fractions.

  3. Cooking Time Calculation:

Nadia will calculate the total cooking time for the chicken roast dinner based on the weight of the chicken. She can practice multiplication by calculating how long it will take to cook based on a standard time per pound.

  4. Vocabulary Building:

Nadia will create a vocabulary list of words related to cooking and the chicken roast dinner (e.g., roast, bake, seasoning, etc.) and use each word in a sentence.

  • "If our chicken weighs 4 pounds, and it takes 20 minutes per pound to cook, how long will it take in total?"
  • "Let’s think about how we can use descriptive words to make our story more interesting. What words can we use to describe the smell of the chicken as it roasts?"
  • "How does cooking together make us feel? What are some fun memories we can create while preparing meals?"
