Objective

By the end of this lesson, Nadia will be able to understand basic English vocabulary related to cooking and math concepts through the context of making lasagne. She will enhance her language skills while also applying math to measure ingredients and calculate portions.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for writing notes and calculations.
  • A timer (can be a phone timer or a kitchen timer).
  • Imaginary ingredients for lasagne (no physical materials needed).
  • Basic understanding of fractions and measurements (e.g., cups, ounces).

Activities

  1. Lasagne Vocabulary Building

Nadia will create a vocabulary list of words related to lasagne, such as "noodles," "sauce," "cheese," "bake," and "layer." She will write definitions for each word and use them in sentences.

  2. Ingredient Measurement Math

Nadia will practice fractions by calculating how much of each ingredient is needed for different serving sizes. For example, if the recipe calls for 2 cups of cheese for 4 servings, how much is needed for 8 servings?

  3. Cooking Time Calculation

Nadia will learn about time management by calculating how long it takes to cook the lasagne. If it takes 45 minutes to bake and she wants to serve it at a specific time, she will determine when to put it in the oven.

  4. Creative Writing: Lasagne Story

Nadia will write a short story about her imaginary experience making lasagne, incorporating the vocabulary words she learned earlier. This activity will help her practice her writing skills in a fun way.

Talking Points

  • "Lasagne is made up of layers. Can you think of other things that have layers?"
  • "When we measure ingredients, why is it important to be precise? Can you think of a time when you had to be precise?"
  • "Fractions are like pieces of a whole. If we cut a pizza into 8 slices, what fraction of the pizza is one slice?"
  • "Time management is key in cooking. If you want to eat at 6 PM and the lasagne takes 45 minutes to bake, what time should you put it in the oven?"
  • "Writing a story can be a fun way to express what you've learned. What adventures could happen while making lasagne?"
