Objective

By the end of this lesson, Nadia will be able to understand basic English vocabulary related to cooking, as well as perform simple math calculations involving measurements and ratios, all while learning to prepare a delicious chicken wrapped in bacon with potato boulangère.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for writing notes and calculations
  • Access to a recipe for chicken wrapped in bacon with potato boulangère
  • Basic cooking utensils (knife, cutting board, frying pan, oven, etc.)
  • Ingredients for the recipe: chicken breasts, bacon, potatoes, cream, garlic, herbs, salt, and pepper
  • Measuring cups and spoons for math activities

Before starting, ensure that Nadia understands basic cooking terms and has a safe cooking environment. Review any safety measures in the kitchen.

Activities

  • Vocabulary Match-Up:

    Nadia will create a list of cooking-related vocabulary words from the recipe and match them with their definitions. This will help her understand the terms she will encounter while cooking.

  • Measurement Math:

    Nadia will practice math by converting measurements from the recipe (e.g., converting cups to ounces) and calculating how much of each ingredient is needed if she wants to double the recipe.

  • Cooking Demonstration:

    Nadia will follow the recipe to prepare the chicken wrapped in bacon with potato boulangère. She will write down each step and any observations she makes during the cooking process.

  • Creative Writing:

    After the meal is prepared, Nadia will write a short story or a descriptive paragraph about her cooking experience, using the vocabulary words she learned earlier.
