Objective

By the end of this lesson, Nadia will learn how to prepare a delicious chicken risotto from scratch, understand the cooking techniques involved, and gain confidence in her culinary skills.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup Arborio rice
  • 1 pound chicken breast (diced)
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup white wine (optional)
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
  • Cooking pot
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Before starting, ensure all ingredients are prepared and within reach. Familiarize yourself with basic knife skills for chopping and dicing ingredients.

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration: Begin by discussing each ingredient used in the risotto. Talk about where they come from and their role in the dish. This will help Nadia appreciate the flavors and textures involved.

  • Cooking Demonstration: Perform a step-by-step cooking demonstration of making chicken risotto. Allow Nadia to participate by stirring and adding ingredients as you go along. This hands-on experience will reinforce her learning.

  • Taste Testing: Once the risotto is cooked, conduct a taste test. Encourage Nadia to describe the flavors and textures she experiences. This activity will enhance her sensory evaluation skills.

  • Creative Presentation: After cooking, have Nadia plate the risotto creatively. Discuss the importance of presentation in cooking and how it affects the dining experience.

  • "Stirring the risotto continuously helps to release the starch, which is key to its creamy texture."
  • "What do you think the white wine adds to the risotto? It enhances the flavor profile and adds acidity!"
  • "Why is it important to taste as we cook? It helps us adjust seasoning and ensures the dish is just right!"
  • "How can we make our dish look more appealing? Presentation is important in cooking, it makes the food more inviting!"
