Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a comprehensive understanding of lobotomy, including its history, purpose, and the ethical implications surrounding the procedure. The student will also prepare a creative presentation that effectively communicates this knowledge to an audience.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a computer or device for research (if applicable)
  • Art supplies (colored paper, markers, etc.) for creating presentation visuals
  • Time for reflection and discussion

Before the lesson, it’s helpful to familiarize yourself with the basic concepts of mental health treatments and the historical context of lobotomy. Understanding the general timeline of mental health treatments will provide a solid foundation for your presentation.

Activities

  • Research and Note-taking:

Spend some time researching lobotomy using online resources or books. Take notes on key facts, historical figures involved, and the reasons lobotomies were performed. Focus on understanding the procedure and its effects on patients.

  • Creative Presentation Design:

Using your notes, create a visual presentation. This could be a poster, a PowerPoint, or even a brochure. Make sure to include important dates, images, and summaries of the main points. Get creative with colors and designs to make it engaging!

  • Role Play:

Act out a short scene where someone is considering a lobotomy in the past. You can play both the patient and the doctor. This will help you understand the perspectives of both sides and the emotional weight of the decision.

  • Discussion and Reflection:

After completing your research and presentation, have a discussion about what you learned. Reflect on the ethical considerations of lobotomy and how it compares to modern mental health treatments. Consider how public perception has changed over time.
