Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the historical context, ethical implications, and scientific aspects of lobotomy. The student will also create a presentation that effectively communicates their findings and engages their audience.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Computer or tablet for research (if available)
  • Presentation software (like PowerPoint or Google Slides) for creating the presentation
  • Access to online resources (if available) for research purposes
  • Basic understanding of medical terms and psychology (optional but helpful)

Activities

  • Research Activity:

The student will spend some time researching lobotomy using online resources or books. They should focus on its history, the procedure itself, and its effects on patients. Encourage them to take notes on interesting facts and quotes that stand out to them.

  • Creative Presentation Design:

Once they have gathered enough information, the student will create a visually engaging presentation. They can use images, diagrams, and bullet points to make their presentation clear and appealing. Encourage them to think about how to present the information in a way that is easy to understand.

  • Role-Play Discussion:

The student will engage in a role-play activity where they take on the persona of a doctor from the 1940s who performs lobotomies, and you can act as a concerned family member. This will help them understand the perspective of both sides and the ethical dilemmas involved.

  • Mock Presentation:

Finally, the student will present their findings to an imaginary audience (you can pretend to be a classroom). This will help them practice their speaking skills and receive feedback on their presentation style and content.

Talking Points

  • "Lobotomy was a popular treatment for mental illness in the mid-20th century. It involved severing connections in the brain to 'cure' patients."
  • "Many people believed that lobotomy could help with conditions like depression and schizophrenia, but it often resulted in severe side effects."
  • "It's important to discuss the ethical implications of lobotomy. Was it right to perform such a drastic procedure on patients?"
  • "Lobotomy has been largely discredited and is no longer performed today. What does that say about how medical practices can change over time?"
  • "Understanding lobotomy helps us learn about the importance of mental health treatments and the need for compassion in medicine."
  • "Can you think of modern treatments that are controversial? How do they compare to lobotomy?"
