Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concepts of biomorphic and geometric shapes as used by the artist Henry Matisse. The student will create their own artwork inspired by Matisse's style, using these shapes to express their creativity.
Materials and Prep
- Paper (any kind will do)
- Pencil
- Colored pencils, crayons, or markers
- Ruler (optional)
- Reference images of Matisse's work (can be printed or viewed online)
Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and find a comfortable workspace. Look up some of Matisse's famous artworks to share with the student during the lesson.
Activities
-
Introduction to Matisse
Start with a brief discussion about Henry Matisse and his unique style. Show the student some of his famous works, focusing on how he uses biomorphic and geometric shapes. Ask them what they notice about the colors and forms in his art.
-
Shape Hunt
Go on a "shape hunt" around the house or outside. Have the student look for different biomorphic (free-form) and geometric shapes. They can draw or list what they find, discussing how these shapes might relate to Matisse's work.
-
Create Your Own Artwork
Using the shapes they found, have the student create their own artwork. Encourage them to combine both biomorphic and geometric shapes, using vibrant colors like Matisse. Remind them that there are no rules in art—it's all about expressing themselves!
-
Art Gallery Walk
Once the artwork is complete, set up a mini art gallery at home. Let the student display their work and explain their choices of shapes and colors. Invite family members to view the gallery and ask questions.
