  • Paintbrushes
  • Water cups
  • Pencil
  • Ruler

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Geometric Shapes:

Start by introducing the student to basic geometric shapes such as squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles. Show examples of each shape and discuss their characteristics.

  2. Shape Hunt:

Take a walk around the house or outside and ask the student to find objects that resemble the geometric shapes discussed earlier. Encourage them to think creatively and point out different examples of each shape they find.

  3. Geometric Watercolor Painting:

Provide the student with a sheet of watercolor paper and ask them to choose a geometric shape to paint. Using a pencil and ruler, they can lightly draw the shape on the paper. Then, using watercolors, have them fill in the shape with vibrant colors. Encourage them to experiment with different color combinations and patterns.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "Can you think of any geometric shapes? Some examples include squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles. They can be found in many objects around us."
  • "Let's go on a shape hunt! Look around the room or outside and try to find objects that resemble the shapes we just talked about. Remember, shapes can come in different sizes and colors."
  • "Now, it's time to create our own geometric watercolor paintings. Choose a shape you like, draw it lightly on the watercolor paper, and then use the watercolors to fill it in with beautiful colors. Be creative and have fun!"
  • "Remember, geometric shapes are all around us, and by recognizing them, we can create beautiful artwork and appreciate the world of mathematics."
