Let's Rhyme, Ily! A Poetry Adventure!

Hi Ily! Today, we're going on a fun adventure into the world of rhymes and poems! Poems often use words that sound the same at the end – that's called rhyming! It makes poems fun to read and hear.

What are Rhymes?

Rhymes are words that have the same ending sound. Like cat and hat, or blue and shoe. Can you hear how they sound alike at the end?

Let's Play a Rhyme Game!

I'll say a word, and you think of a word that rhymes:

  • What rhymes with dog? (Maybe log, fog, hog?)
  • What rhymes with sun? (Maybe fun, run, bun?)
  • What rhymes with car? (Maybe star, far, jar?)

Great job! You're already a rhyme master!

Writing Our Rhyming Poem!

Now, let's write our very own poem. Poems can be about anything! Your favourite animal, a toy, what you like to do, or even a silly thought!

Step 1: Pick a Topic! What do you want to write about?

Step 2: Think of Rhyming Words! Let's think about your topic. If you chose 'cat', some words might be: cat, hat, sat, mat, pat, fat. If you chose 'play', some words might be: play, day, say, way, stay.

Step 3: Write Your Lines! We can make a simple poem where the first two lines rhyme, and the next two lines rhyme (AABB pattern). Let's try!

Example:

I have a little cat, (A)
Who likes to wear a hat. (A)
She loves to chase a mouse, (B)
All around the house. (B)

Your Turn!

Let's start your first line. What do you want to say?

(Help Ily write the first line, then find a rhyming word for the end of the second line. Repeat for the third and fourth lines with a new rhyme.)

Keep going! You can make it longer if you like!

Amazing Poet!

Wow, Ily! You wrote a rhyming poem! That's fantastic! Read it out loud and listen to the rhymes. Poetry is a wonderful way to play with words. Keep practicing, and you'll write even more amazing poems!
