Sacha's Awesome Aboriginal National Park Adventure!
Get ready for an exciting day, Sacha! We're going on an excursion to our local Aboriginal national park. It's a special place full of history, nature, and adventure. Let's explore it through different subjects!
Phase 1: Pre-Trip Preparation (Geography, History, Math)
- Map Masters (Geography & Math): Let's look at the park map! Can you find the entrance? Can you spot different trails, rivers, or special sites marked? Using the map scale, can we estimate how long one of the shorter trails might be? Let's plan our route!
- History Detectives (History & English): Before we go, let's do some research online or at the library about the Aboriginal group(s) connected to this parkland. What is their history here? Are there any specific dreamtime stories associated with this area? Write down 3 interesting facts you learn.
Phase 2: Park Exploration (Physical Education, Science, Art, English)
- Nature Navigator Hike (Physical Education & Science): Time to explore! As we walk or hike, pay attention to your body. How does the ground feel under your feet? Let's try walking quietly like a scout. While we walk, be a scientist! Use your notebook to list or draw different plants and animals you see. Can you spot any animal tracks? Look closely at the rocks and soil. What do you observe? (Remember to stay on marked trails and respect the environment).
- Sensory Journaling (English & Science): Find a nice spot to sit quietly for 5-10 minutes. Close your eyes for a minute. What do you hear? What do you smell? Now open your eyes. What colours and shapes dominate the landscape? Write a few sentences or a short paragraph in your journal describing your experience using your senses.
- Art in Nature (Art): Look around you for inspiration. Maybe it's the pattern on tree bark, the shape of leaves, the colours of the sky, or rock formations. Find something interesting and sketch it in your notebook. Think about the Aboriginal art we learned about – do you see any patterns or symbols in nature that remind you of it? (Remember: take only photos and memories, leave natural items where they are unless park rules specifically permit collection).
Phase 3: Post-Trip Reflection (Art, English, Math, History)
- Park Story (English): Write a short story about an imaginary creature living in the park, or retell one of the dreamtime stories you learned about in your own words. Or, write a descriptive piece sharing your favourite part of the visit.
- Nature Art Creation (Art): Using your sketches and memories (and any permitted collected items like fallen leaves if allowed), create a larger artwork. This could be a drawing, painting, or collage inspired by the park's nature or Aboriginal art styles.
- Hike Calculations (Math): Looking back at the map and remembering our walk, let's calculate the approximate distance we covered. If we saw 5 different types of birds and 3 types of lizards, how many types of animals did we identify in total?
- History Recap (History): Share the 3 interesting historical facts you learned before the trip with someone else. Discuss why it's important to respect and learn about the history of the land.
This park is a classroom without walls! Have fun exploring and learning, Sacha!
