Materials You'll Need:

  • Paper (plain, construction - brown, green, yellow)
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Pencil
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Playdough or clay (optional)
  • A simple book or printed story about tortoises (or read one online)
  • Map of Florida or the United States

Let's Explore!

Science: Meet the Gopher Tortoise!

Hi Mia! Today we're learning about a super cool animal that lives right here in Florida – the Gopher Tortoise! Did you know they are reptiles, like lizards and snakes? They have a hard shell to protect them. Gopher Tortoises are special because they dig long tunnels underground called burrows. These burrows are like apartments for other animals! Over 350 different kinds of critters use Gopher Tortoise burrows for shelter. That makes the Gopher Tortoise a 'keystone species' – very important for its home, called a habitat.

Activity: Let's draw the Gopher Tortoise habitat. Use green paper for grass, brown for sandy soil, and blue for the sky. Draw a Gopher Tortoise coming out of its burrow entrance (an arch shape).

Math: Tortoise Measuring Fun!

Gopher Tortoise shells have cool patterns called 'scutes'. Let's pretend we found a tortoise shell!

Activity 1: Draw a big tortoise shell shape on paper. Now, draw 13 big scutes (like puzzle pieces) on its back. Count them out loud! Now draw 24 small scutes around the edge. Count those too!

Activity 2: Adult Gopher Tortoises are usually between 9 and 11 inches long. Let's use our ruler or measuring tape! Can you find 9 inches? How about 11 inches? Let's measure some things around the room that are about that size.

History & Social Studies: Florida's Special Turtle

Gopher Tortoises have lived in Florida for a very, very long time! They are an important part of Florida's natural history. People are working hard to protect them and their homes because their habitat is shrinking.

Activity: Let's find Florida on a map! Can you point to it? Gopher Tortoises like sandy places with pine trees, often called sandhills or pine flatwoods. Can you imagine where those might be on the Florida map?

English: Tortoise Tales & Words

Let's read a story about a tortoise! (Read a selected book or online story). After reading, let's talk about the tortoise character. What was it like?

Activity: Time to write! Think about the Gopher Tortoise. Is it slow? Is it strong? Does it have a hard shell? Write three sentences describing the Gopher Tortoise. Example: 'The Gopher Tortoise has a bumpy shell.' Use your best handwriting!

Art: Crafty Tortoise!

Let's make our own Gopher Tortoise!

Activity 1 (Paper Craft): Cut out a large oval from brown paper for the shell. Cut out shapes for the head, legs (short and stumpy!), and a small tail. Glue them onto another piece of paper. Use crayons or markers to draw scutes on the shell and add eyes and a mouth.

Activity 2 (Optional Clay): If you have playdough or clay, try sculpting your own Gopher Tortoise! Don't forget its strong legs for digging and its protective shell.

Great job today, Mia! You learned so much about the amazing Florida Gopher Tortoise using science, math, history, reading, writing, and art!
