Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts related to sharks.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Shark pictures or toys (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Counting Sharks: Draw or use shark pictures/toys. Count how many sharks you have. Write the number.
- Addition Fun: Pick two numbers and add them together. For example, if you have 3 sharks and your friend has 2 sharks, how many sharks do you have in total? Write down the addition sentence.
- Subtraction Challenge: Imagine you had 7 sharks but 3 swam away. How many sharks are left? Write down the subtraction sentence.
- Shark Patterns: Create a pattern using shark pictures/toys. For example, shark, shark, shark, fish, shark, shark, shark, fish. Can you continue the pattern? Write down the pattern.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to learn about sharks and practice some math with them."
- "We will start by counting the number of sharks we have. Let's see how many there are."
- "Now, let's try adding sharks. If you have some sharks and I give you more, we need to figure out how many sharks you have in total. We write it as an addition sentence."
- "Next, we will try subtracting sharks. If some sharks swim away, we need to know how many are left. We write it as a subtraction sentence."
- "Finally, we will work on patterns using shark pictures. We will create a sequence and see if we can continue the pattern."
