Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basic concepts of Earth Science related to gardening and apply them to their own gardening activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Gardening tools (e.g., shovel, rake, watering can)
  • Seeds or seedlings
  • Soil
  • Containers or garden beds
  • Access to outdoor space
  • Prior knowledge of basic gardening practices

Activities

  1. Introduction to Earth Science and Gardening: Discuss the importance of Earth Science in gardening and how it helps plants grow. Explain concepts such as soil composition, water cycle, and weather patterns.
  2. Soil Investigation: Have the student examine different types of soil samples and discuss their characteristics, including texture, color, and moisture content. Guide them in understanding the importance of soil quality for plant growth.
  3. Planting Seeds: Demonstrate the process of planting seeds in containers or garden beds. Explain the significance of proper seed depth, spacing, and watering. Allow the student to plant their own seeds and observe the germination process over time.
  4. Watering and Nurturing: Teach the student about the water needs of plants and the importance of consistent watering. Discuss the effects of overwatering and underwatering on plant health. Guide them in creating a watering schedule for their garden.
  5. Observation and Record-Keeping: Encourage the student to regularly observe their plants and record their growth progress. Discuss the changes they notice and relate them to the concepts learned in Earth Science.

Seventh Grade Talking Points

  • "Earth Science is the study of the Earth's physical components and processes."
  • "Soil composition refers to the different materials that make up soil, such as sand, silt, and clay."
  • "The water cycle involves the continuous movement of water between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere."
  • "Weather patterns are the changes in atmospheric conditions that occur over a short period of time."
  • "Soil texture is determined by the size of the particles it contains, which affects its ability to retain water and nutrients."
  • "Proper seed depth and spacing are important for allowing seeds to germinate and grow without competing for resources."
  • "Water is essential for plant growth, as it helps transport nutrients and maintain turgidity."
  • "Overwatering can drown plants by depriving their roots of oxygen, while underwatering can cause wilting and stunted growth."
  • "Observing and recording plant growth helps us understand the impact of environmental factors and make informed gardening decisions."
