Three Little Pigs' STEM Challenge: Building Sturdy Structures
Let's use what we learned from "What's the Matter with the Three Little Pigs?" to become engineers like the pigs... but maybe a bit smarter!
Lesson Steps (30-45 minutes)
- Introduction & Recap (5 mins):
Quickly discuss the book (if read recently) or the classic story. What were the houses made of? Why did the brick house survive? Talk about how different materials have different strengths. Today's challenge: Build houses like the pigs and see which one survives the 'Big Bad Wolf' (our fan/hairdryer)! - Design & Build (20-25 mins):
Set up your building station with the materials.
Challenge: Build three small structures, each using mostly one type of material:- House 1: Straw/Grass
- House 2: Toothpicks/Twigs
- House 3: Legos/Cubes/Blocks
- The Huff & Puff Test! (5-10 mins):
Place the houses one by one on the building surface.
Using the fan or hairdryer on a low setting (start from a distance and move closer slowly), aim the 'wind' at each house for a set amount of time (e.g., 15-20 seconds).
Observe what happens! Does it wobble? Does it fall over? Which ones withstand the 'wolf'? - Discussion & Conclusion (5 mins):
Which house was the strongest? Why do you think that is? Discuss the materials (bricks are rigid and heavy) and the design (connections, base stability). How is this similar to the story? How could you have made the weaker houses stronger? What materials make real houses strong? Relate back to the physics concepts of force, stability, and material properties from the book.
Clean Up
Gather all materials and put them away.
