Pet Parade Fun!
Materials Needed:
- Assortment of toy pet animals (dog, cat, fish, bird, etc.)
- Picture cards of common pet animals
- Small basket or container
- Construction paper
- Washable crayons or markers
Lesson Activities (20 minutes):
1. Pet Introduction & Song (3 mins):
- Gather your toy animals and picture cards.
- Sit with the child and show the picture cards one by one. Ask, "What animal is this? Do we know anyone with a pet like this?"
- Sing a simple welcome song, like (to the tune of 'Twinkle Twinkle'): "Hello little doggy friend, Woof woof woof until the end. / Hello little kitty cat, Meow meow meow, just like that." (Repeat for 1-2 other pets).
2. Animal Sounds & Moves (5 mins):
- Pick up a toy animal (e.g., the dog). Ask, "What sound does a doggy make?" Encourage the child to say "Woof woof!" and pretend to wag their tail or pant.
- Repeat with 2-3 other animals (e.g., cat - "Meow," stretch; fish - "Blub blub," make fish lips and wiggle hands; bird - "Tweet tweet," flap arms).
- Make it a game: "Can you hop like a bunny?" "Can you swim like a fish?"
3. Pet Sorting (5 mins):
- Gently mix the toy animals on the floor or table.
- Say, "Let's help the animal friends find their families! Can you find all the doggies?"
- Guide the child to place all the dogs together in one spot or in the basket.
- Repeat for another type of animal (e.g., "Now let's find all the kitties!").
- Briefly count the animals in one group: "Look! One, two doggies!"
4. Quick Pet Art (4 mins):
- Give the child a piece of construction paper and crayons/markers.
- Ask, "Can you draw your favorite pet animal?" or "Let's draw a fish!"
- Talk about the drawing: "What color is your doggy?" "Is that a big cat or a little cat?" Focus on participation, not perfection.
5. Pet Parade Wrap-up (3 mins):
- Say, "Time for a Pet Parade!"
- Let the child choose one toy pet to hold.
- March around the room together singing a simple marching song or revisiting the sounds: "Marching with the dog, woof woof woof! Marching with the cat, meow meow meow!"
- End by saying goodbye to the pets and putting them away together (optional clean-up practice).
