Let's Sign! BSL Basics with Phoebe

Time: 15 Minutes

Warm-up (2 mins)

Hello Phoebe! Today we're going to do something really cool – learn a bit of British Sign Language, or BSL. It's a language used by many people in the UK. It uses hands, faces, and body language to communicate. Ready to try some basic conversation starters?

Activity 1: Greetings! (5 mins)

Let's learn how to say hello and goodbye!

  1. Hello: I'll show you the sign for 'Hello'. Watch me first, then try copying me. We can use a mirror if it helps! Let's practice it 5 times together.
  2. Goodbye: Now for 'Goodbye'. Watch me, then you try. Great! Let's practice 'Goodbye' 5 times.
  3. Practice Swap: Let's try signing 'Hello' and 'Goodbye' to each other!

Activity 2: How Are You? (5 mins)

Now let's learn how to ask someone how they are, and how to reply.

  1. How are you?: This sign often uses facial expression too! Watch me sign 'How are you?'. Now you try. Let's practice together.
  2. Responses (Fine/Good): Here are simple ways to reply. Watch me sign 'Fine'. Now you try. Watch me sign 'Good'. Now you try. Let's practice both a few times.
  3. Mini-Conversation: Let's link it! I'll sign 'Hello', then 'How are you?'. You sign 'Fine' or 'Good'. Then we swap roles!

Activity 3: My Name Is... (2 mins)

Let's try introducing ourselves.

  1. My name is...: The phrase 'My name is...' has its own signs. Watch me demonstrate 'My name is...'. (We won't worry about fingerspelling your name just yet, just the phrase!). Try signing it after me.
  2. Practice: Let's try signing 'Hello, my name is...'

Wrap-up & Review (1 min)

Wow, you learned so much in just 15 minutes! Can you show me 'Hello', 'How are you?', and 'Goodbye' one last time? Amazing! Keep practicing, and maybe next time we can learn more signs or even how to fingerspell your name!
