Introduction: Fuel Your Body! (10 minutes)
Hi Super Kid! Did you know that the food you eat gives your body amazing superpowers? Just like a car needs fuel to go, your body needs good food to run, jump, play, learn, and grow strong! Eating healthy food is like giving your body the best kind of superhero fuel. Today, we're going on a Rainbow Food Adventure to learn about the different kinds of foods that make us super!
What's your favorite food to eat? Why do you like it?
Activity 1: Discovering the Rainbow Food Groups! (20 minutes)
Our food comes in many different colors, and each color can tell us something special about how it helps our body. We can sort foods into groups. Let's learn about them:
- Fruits (Taste the Rainbow!): Think of red strawberries, orange oranges, yellow bananas, green grapes, blue blueberries, and purple plums! Fruits give us vitamins to help us not get sick and give us energy to play. Can you name three fruits?
- Vegetables (Grow Strong Veggies!): Green broccoli, orange carrots, red tomatoes (yes, it's a fruit but often eaten like a veggie!), yellow corn. Vegetables are packed with power to help you see well, have healthy skin, and fight off sniffles. Can you name three vegetables?
- Grains (Energy Givers!): Bread, pasta, rice, oatmeal, and crackers. These foods give us long-lasting energy for big adventures and help our brains think! Think of them as your all-day power fuel. What's a grain food you like?
- Protein (Mighty Muscles!): Chicken, fish, beans, eggs, nuts, and tofu. Protein helps build strong muscles so you can run fast and lift things. It also helps your body repair itself if you get a boo-boo. What's a protein food you've eaten?
- Dairy & Alternatives (Bone Builders!): Milk, cheese, and yogurt (or calcium-rich alternatives like almond or soy milk). These help build strong bones and teeth! Got milk? What's your favorite dairy food?
Mini-Activity: Food Group Sort! If you have your pictures of different foods, try sorting them into these five super groups!
Activity 2: Build Your Own Super-Powered Plate! (20 minutes)
Now it's time to become a super food chef! A super-powered plate has a little bit of something from most of the food groups to give you balanced energy and all the good stuff your body needs. Think about making your plate colorful!
Your Mission:
- Take your paper plate (or draw a big circle on paper).
- Look at your food pictures or get your crayons ready to draw.
- Choose foods from at least 3-4 different food groups to create a healthy and yummy meal. Try to include:
- A colorful fruit
- A power-packed vegetable
- An energy-giving grain
- A muscle-building protein
- (Optional: A bone-building dairy item or drink)
- Glue or draw your chosen foods onto your plate.
Once your plate is ready, tell me about it! What foods did you choose? What superpowers do they give you?
