Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will have a basic understanding of the concepts of physics and how they apply to everyday life.
Materials and Prep
- Toy cars or balls
- A ramp or inclined surface
- A stopwatch or timer
- Objects of different weights (e.g., a feather, a rock)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Rolling Race: Set up a ramp using a book or any inclined surface. Take two toy cars or balls and place them at the top of the ramp. Let them roll down and see which one reaches the bottom first. Discuss why one might be faster than the other.
- Gravity Exploration: Gather objects of different weights, such as a feather and a rock. Hold them up and ask the student which one they think will fall faster when dropped. Test their predictions by dropping the objects at the same time and observe the results.
- Push and Pull: Have the student push or pull various objects around the room. Discuss the difference between pushing and pulling and how they affect the motion of the objects.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Physics is a branch of science that helps us understand how things move and interact with each other."
- "We can learn about physics by doing fun experiments and observing what happens."
- "When we roll a toy car or a ball down a ramp, we can see how gravity pulls it down and makes it move."
- "Gravity is a force that pulls objects towards each other. It's what keeps us on the ground and makes things fall."
- "Objects that are heavier or have more weight are usually harder to move or lift."
- "When we push something, we use force to move it away from us. When we pull something, we use force to bring it closer to us."
