Part 1: What's a Constitution, Anyway? (Approximately 10 minutes)
Hi Cora! Imagine your family wants to build the COOLEST treehouse ever! What would you need first? Rules, right? Like who gets to use it, how to keep it safe, and how to make decisions fairly so everyone has fun. The U.S. Constitution is like the ultimate rulebook for our whole country, the United States of America! It was written a long, long time ago by some very smart people called the Founding Fathers.
This amazing document does two main things:
- It sets up how our government works.
- It protects important rights for all citizens.
Today, we're going to focus on the VERY beginning of the Constitution, a special part called the Preamble. The Preamble is like the "mission statement" or the "big goals" for our country. It tells us why the Constitution was written. Ready to explore?
Part 2: Preamble Power! Unpacking the Big Goals (Approximately 15 minutes)
Let's look at the Preamble together! (Teacher: Show Cora the Preamble printout. Read it aloud with her, or have her read parts. If using the optional video, this is a good time to watch it.)
"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

(Teacher: Lay out the pre-made index cards or sticky notes with simplified purposes. Read each main phrase from the Preamble below and have Cora match it to the correct simplified purpose card. Discuss briefly.)
- "Form a more perfect Union" matches with: Make our country better and united. (Example: Think of how states help each other during a hurricane, working as one team.)
- "Establish Justice" matches with: Make things fair for everyone. (Example: Judges and courts making fair decisions based on laws.)

On your paper or whiteboard, I want you to:
- Write down the purpose (you can use the simple version we talked about).
- Draw a picture that shows what that purpose means to you, OR write a sentence giving an example of that purpose in action.
For example, if you choose "keep peace at home," you might draw a friendly police officer, or a neighborhood where people are getting along. (Teacher: Give Cora time to draw/write. Discuss her creations. Ask her why she chose those examples and how they connect to the purpose. Encourage her to use her own words.)
