Snow Leopard Super Sleuths: Designing a Mountain Habitat
Part 1: Meet the Ghost of the Mountains! (15-20 minutes)
Hello, young explorer! Have you ever heard of an animal called the 'ghost of the mountains'? It's a mysterious and beautiful creature. Any guesses what it might be?
(Allow student to guess. Then reveal...) It's the amazing Snow Leopard!
Let's look at some pictures of snow leopards (show provided pictures or search online together if available and supervised, otherwise describe vividly using books or other resources). What do you notice about them?
- How does their fur look? Why do you think it's like that? (Guide towards camouflage, warmth)
- Look at their paws! Why so big? (Helps them walk on snow, like snowshoes!)
- See that super long tail? What could it be for? (Balance on rocky cliffs and for warmth)
Snow leopards are perfectly designed for living high up in the cold, snowy mountains of Asia, in places like the Himalayas.
Part 2: A Snow Leopard's World (10-15 minutes)
Imagine you are a snow leopard. What would your home be like?
- Where they live: Steep, rocky mountains, often covered in snow. It's very cold!
- What they eat: They are hunters! They mostly eat animals like wild sheep (called blue sheep or bharal) and ibex (a type of wild goat).
- How they survive: Their spotted coat helps them hide among the rocks and snow (camouflage). Their strong legs help them jump far. Their warm fur keeps them cozy.
Unfortunately, snow leopards are endangered, which means there aren't many left in the wild. It's important to protect them and their mountain homes.
Part 3: Habitat Design Challenge! (30-45 minutes)
Now it's your turn to be a super habitat designer! Your mission is to create a perfect, miniature mountain home for a snow leopard using the materials we have.
Think like a snow leopard! What does it need in its home?
- A safe place to rest and hide (like a den or a cave in the rocks).
- Rocky areas for climbing and looking for prey.
- Snowy patches for camouflage.
- Maybe a spot where it can find food (you could even try to make a little blue sheep model!).
Let's get building!
- Use the cardboard box as the base for your mountain scene.
- Use construction paper to create a backdrop of mountains and sky inside the box.
- Use cotton balls or white felt to make snow on the ground and mountains.
- With Play-Doh or clay, sculpt your own snow leopard! You can also make rocks, caves, or even a tiny prey animal.
- Use markers or crayons to add details to your habitat.
- Glue or tape everything in place. Be creative and have fun!
(Teacher provides guidance and assistance as needed, encouraging problem-solving and creativity.)
Part 4: Show and Tell! (5-10 minutes)
Wow, your snow leopard habitat looks amazing! Tell me all about it:
- What are some special features you included for your snow leopard?
- How does this habitat help your snow leopard survive and be happy?
- What was your favorite part of designing and building this habitat?
- What was the trickiest part? How did you solve it?
Optional Super Sleuth Extension:
- Story Time: Write or tell a short story about a day in the life of the snow leopard living in the habitat you created. What adventures does it have?
- Conservation Corner: With a grown-up, look up one organization that helps protect snow leopards. What do they do? Why is it important?
Great job today, Snow Leopard Super Sleuth! You've learned so much and created something wonderful!
