Heartbeat Detectives! (5 minutes)

Hi Cora! Today, we're going on an adventure inside our bodies to become Heartbeat Detectives! We'll investigate our amazing heart, its team of blood vessels, and how taking care of them helps us live awesome, energetic lives. Remember how your heart beats faster when you run and play? We'll explore why!

Activity: Let's find your pulse! Place two fingers gently on your wrist or the side of your neck. Feel that little beat? That's your heart working! Let's count how many beats you feel in 30 seconds. (Teacher: Time for 30 seconds). Now, multiply that number by 2. That's your resting heart rate per minute!

The Body's Superhighway (10 minutes)

Imagine our body is a giant, bustling city. The heart is like the main power station and super-efficient delivery service, pumping all day long. The blood vessels (arteries, veins, and tiny capillaries) are the roads and highways that connect everything.

Discussion: What do you think the heart's main job is? (To pump blood). And what do these 'roads' or blood vessels do? (They carry the blood all over the body).

Creative Task: Let's draw our 'Body City'! Grab your paper and markers. Draw a big, strong heart as the central station. Now, draw some big roads going out from the heart – these are like arteries carrying fresh supplies (oxygen-rich blood) to all the 'houses' (our body cells). Then, draw other roads coming back to the heart – these are like veins, bringing back materials to be recycled or disposed of (blood with carbon dioxide). What important things do you think travel on these superhighways? (Blood, which carries oxygen, food for energy, and takes away waste products like carbon dioxide).

Heart Rate Fun & Fitness (10 minutes)

Time to see that heart power in action!

Activity: Let's get moving! For 1 minute, do some fun exercises like jumping jacks, running in place, or dancing to your favorite song snippet. (Teacher: Time for 1 minute).

Great job! Now, quickly find your pulse again and let's count the beats for 30 seconds. (Teacher: Time for 30 seconds). Multiply that by 2. What's your heart rate now?

Discussion: What happened to your heart rate? Did it go up or down? Why do you think it changed? (It went up! When we exercise, our muscles work harder and need more oxygen and energy. So, our heart pumps faster to deliver more blood filled with those goodies!)

Lifestyle Choices: Power Up or Power Down Your Heart! (10 minutes)

Our heart is incredible, but we need to be good team captains and help it stay strong and healthy. Our everyday choices make a BIG difference. Think about things like the food we eat, how much we move, and choices like avoiding smoking.

Scenario Time & Drawing:

  • Healthy Heart Highway: Imagine someone who eats lots of colorful fruits and vegetables, drinks water, and loves to play outside or ride their bike. What would their heart and 'body city roads' (blood vessels) look like? On one side of your paper, draw a happy, strong heart with wide, clear 'roads'. These roads are open and blood flows easily! This leads to good lung capacity and lots of energy for fun – a great quality of life!
  • Unhealthy Heart Alleyway: Now, think about choices that aren't so great for our heart. Maybe someone eats mostly sugary snacks and fried foods, spends most of their time sitting, and (for older people, or if exposed) uses tobacco. What might happen to their heart and 'roads'? On the other side of your paper, or on a new one, draw what this might look like. The heart might look tired, and the 'roads' could become narrow or even blocked, like a traffic jam! This can make the heart work too hard, reduce lung capacity, and make someone feel tired and unwell – that's a lower quality of life.

Cause and Effect Chat:

  • What's the effect of an active lifestyle and healthy diet? (Stronger heart, clear blood vessels, better lung capacity, more energy, feel good, can do more fun things!).
  • What's the effect of an inactive lifestyle, poor diet, or tobacco use? (Weaker heart, risk of blocked vessels, reduced lung capacity, less energy, may get sick more easily, can't participate in activities as well).

How does looking after our cardio system improve our overall quality of life? (We feel better, have more energy, can enjoy activities, and stay healthier longer!)

My Awesome Heart Pledge (5 minutes)

You've been an amazing Heartbeat Detective today, Cora!

Reflection & Action: What's one important thing you learned today about your heart and how to keep it healthy?

On a small piece of paper, draw or write one simple thing you will do this week to show your heart some love. It could be choosing a healthy snack, playing outside for an extra 10 minutes, or even remembering to take nice calm breaths if you feel stressed. This is your 'Awesome Heart Pledge'!

You did a fantastic job exploring the amazing circulatory system!
