Unlocking Your Life Cycle Superpowers!
Materials: Large paper or whiteboard, markers/crayons/colored pencils, (optional) index cards with factor names.
Time: 40 minutes
Hello Cora, Super Growth Explorer! (5 minutes)
Imagine life is like an awesome video game where you unlock new levels and special abilities as you go. What do you think some of the big 'levels' or stages are that people go through in their lives? (Allow Cora to share ideas. Guide towards Infancy, Childhood, Adolescence, Adulthood, Old Age)
Today, we're going to explore these amazing life stages, especially the super exciting one called adolescence – which you're getting closer to! We'll discover:
- The amazing changes that happen as you grow, like unlocking new superpowers!
- Some of the 'power-ups' and 'challenges' that can affect your journey.
Our goals for today are:
- To name three stages of the human life cycle.
- To describe one physical, one emotional, and one social change that happens during adolescence.
- To compare two things, like family support and being active, that can help you grow.
Activity 1: Your Adolescent Power-Up Map! (15 minutes)
Adolescence is a really important time, like a major level-up in your life game! Lots of new 'powers' and abilities start to unlock. Let's brainstorm some of these changes:
- Physical Powers: How does the body change? (Guide: getting taller, body shape changes, voice changes (for some), skin changes etc.)
- Emotional Powers: How do feelings change? (Guide: feeling things more strongly, wanting more independence, new kinds of worries or excitements, mood swings.)
- Social Powers: How do friendships and relationships change? (Guide: friends become super important, you might join new groups, learn to see things from others' perspectives, navigate peer pressure.)
- Intellectual Powers: How does your thinking change? (Guide: solving trickier problems, thinking about the future, understanding more complex ideas, developing your own opinions.)
Now, on your big paper, let's draw a character representing an adolescent. Around your character, draw or write down some of these 'superpowers' or changes we just talked about. Be creative!
(Allow Cora time to draw and label. Discuss her choices.)
Activity 2: Growth Boosters & Challenges – The Factors! (15 minutes)
In any life game, there are things that can give you a boost (power-ups!) and things that can make the game a bit trickier (challenges). These are called 'factors' that affect how we grow and develop. Let's explore some common ones:
- Heredity (Your Starter Pack): These are traits passed down from your family, like your natural hair color or how tall you might grow. It's like the basic character design you start with!
- Family (Your Support Team): How your family supports you, teaches you, and cares for you. They are like your trainers and cheerleaders!
- Environment (Your Game World): Where you live, your school, your community. A safe and supportive environment is like a great level to explore!
- Physical Activity (Your Energy Boost): Moving your body through play and exercise. This is a major power-up for your physical and mental health!
- Hormones (The Change Triggers): Special chemical messengers in your body that tell it when to grow and change, especially during adolescence. They unlock big new features!
- Disease (Game Glitches): Sometimes we get sick, and that can affect our energy and growth for a while. It’s like a temporary glitch in the game that you can often overcome.
Let's pick two of these factors, say, Family Support and Physical Activity.
How can your family help you grow and develop your 'superpowers'? (Discuss: emotional support, healthy food, helping with homework, teaching right from wrong, providing a safe home.)
How can being physically active help you? (Discuss: stronger body, better mood, more energy, good for your brain, helps you sleep.)
Now, think about these factors. Which ones can you have some 'control' over, like choosing which power-up to use in a game? (Guide: We can choose to be active, we can try to communicate well with family, we can make healthy food choices when available, we can work on our study habits. We can't choose our heredity, but we can make choices to support the body we have!) This is about adapting and enhancing our growth by making positive choices!
