Food Detectives & Body Image Champions!

Welcome, Super Snacker Cora! Today, we're going on an exciting mission to uncover the secrets of healthy eating, create super-powered meals, and become wise about what our bodies truly need and how awesome they are!

Our Mission Briefing (40 Minutes Total):

  • Warm-up: What Fuels You? (2 minutes)
    • Let's chat! What's your absolute favorite snack? What makes it so yummy? Today we'll explore how to make our snacks super AND healthy!
  • Activity 1: MyPlate.gov Snack Safari! (10 minutes)
    • Okay, Detective Cora, your first assignment! We're going to visit MyPlate.gov.
    • Your mission: Find ONE healthy snack idea from each of the five food groups: Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Protein, and Dairy. Jot them down or tell them to me.
    • Quick Chat: Why is it good to pick snacks from different groups (variety)? Why not eat a whole bag of cookies every day (moderation and balance)?
  • Activity 2: Master Meal Builder with MyPlate (13 minutes)
    • Great job on the snack safari! Now, let's use MyPlate.gov (the plate visual is perfect!) to build a balanced LUNCH or DINNER.
    • Imagine you're packing a super lunchbox or planning a super dinner. What would you choose for:
      • Half your plate: Fruits & Veggies?
      • A quarter of your plate: Grains? (Think whole grains!)
      • A quarter of your plate: Protein?
      • A side of Dairy?
    • Share your super meal idea with me! We'll see how it matches the MyPlate guide.
  • Activity 3: Food, Family, Feelings & Fun Facts (10 minutes)
    • Family & Culture Connection: Cora, does your family have special meals you eat often, maybe for holidays or just because they're favorites? How do these family traditions or your family's background influence what you like to eat? (This helps us see how family and culture shape our food choices).
    • Body Image Power Talk: Sometimes, TV, movies, or ads show people in ways that aren't very realistic or try to tell us what's 'perfect.' What are some silly or untrue ideas society sometimes gives us about how bodies should look or what we should eat? Remember, healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes! Being strong, energetic, and kind to ourselves is what truly matters. Focusing on healthy foods and being active helps us feel good and keeps our bodies working well (maintaining healthy body composition, boosting self-esteem, and helping prevent diseases).
  • Mission Debrief & Wrap-up (5 minutes)
    • Awesome work, Cora! You've used MyPlate like a pro, designed a balanced meal, and thought about some really important ideas about food and how we see ourselves.
    • Key takeaway: Eating a variety of foods (variety), in sensible amounts (moderation), and getting a bit from all food groups (balance) helps us feel great, stay strong, and appreciate our amazing bodies!
