Wow Word Wizards: Making Our Stories Sparkle!

Hello, Future Word Wizard!

Today, we're going on an adventure to find special words that make our stories and talking super exciting! Are you ready?

What are Everyday Words and Wow Words?

Some words are like plain clothes we wear every day. We call these Everyday Words (these are like Tier 1 words). They are useful, like "big," "small," "happy," or "sad."

But some words are like sparkly costumes or super cool capes! We call these Wow Words (these are like Tier 2 words). They make things sound much more interesting! Instead of just "big," we could say "enormous" or "gigantic"! Instead of "happy," we could say "joyful" or "ecstatic"!

Activity 1: Word Detective Sort!

Let's be word detectives! I have a pile of word cards. Some are Everyday Words and some are Wow Words. Your mission is to read each word (or I can help!) and decide if it goes in the "Everyday Words" pile or the "Wow Words" pile (or into our special jars!).

Example Word Cards:

  • Everyday Words: good, big, said, walk, little, fast, pretty, see
  • Wow Words: wonderful, enormous, whispered, stroll, tiny, swift, gorgeous, glimpse

(Teacher: Prepare about 10-15 mixed word cards. Discuss why each word fits its category.)

Activity 2: Super Sentence Makeover!

Now that we're experts at spotting Wow Words, let's give some plain sentences a makeover! I'll give you a sentence with an Everyday Word, and you can choose a Wow Word to make it sparkle!

Example Sentences for Makeover:

  1. The cat was big. (How can we make it WOW? The cat was _______________!)
  2. The girl was happy. (The girl was _______________!)
  3. He walked to the park. (He _______________ to the park!)
  4. "Hello," she said. ("Hello," she _______________!)
  5. It was a good day. (It was a _________________ day!)

(Teacher: Provide a list of Wow Words students can choose from for each sentence if needed, or encourage them to recall from Activity 1.)

Activity 3: Your Magical Story Adventure!

This is the most exciting part! You get to be the author of your very own magical story. Try to use at least three Wow Words that we learned today (or any other Wow Words you know!) in your story. You can write it down, tell it to me, or even draw pictures and tell the story with your drawings!

Story Starters (optional, or create your own!):

  • Once upon a time, a tiny __________ (Wow Word for small) mouse found a _________ (Wow Word for big) piece of cheese...
  • The _________ (Wow Word for pretty) princess decided to _________ (Wow Word for walk) through the _________ (Wow Word for adjective, e.g., mysterious) forest...
  • A brave knight saw a ________ (Wow Word for scary/big) dragon and _________ (Wow Word for said loudly) "...!"

(Teacher: Encourage creativity and focus on the application of Wow Words contextually. Help with spelling or writing as needed, but prioritize oral storytelling and word use for a 6-year-old.)
