Jackal Journeys: Designing a Den and Telling a Tale!

Part 1: Jackal Investigator (Approx. 45-60 minutes)

Welcome, young ecologist! Today, we embark on an exciting journey into the world of the clever and adaptable jackal. These fascinating animals are masters of survival. Let's become jackal experts!

1. Meet the Jackal: We'll start by getting to know these animals. If possible, watch an engaging, short (3-5 minute) nature documentary clip showcasing jackals in their natural environment.(Teacher/Parent Note: Please preview any video content for age-appropriateness and focus on jackal behavior and habitat. Search terms like 'jackal habitat' or 'black-backed jackal life' might be useful.) Alternatively, read an engaging chapter or article about jackals from a wildlife book or a reputable online source. After watching/reading, discuss: What was the most surprising thing you learned? What actions or behaviors did you observe?
2. Fact-Finding Mission: Choose one type of jackal to focus on (e.g., Black-backed Jackal, Side-striped Jackal, or Golden Jackal). Using internet resources (such as National Geographic Kids, A-Z Animals, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Explorers, or African Wildlife Foundation) or provided books, research your chosen jackal. Your mission is to find out:
   • Where in the world does it live? (Continent, specific regions, type of environment like savanna, woodland, scrubland, or even desert edges.)
   • What kind of home (den) does it prefer? (Does it dig its own, use abandoned burrows, or find natural shelters?)
   • What's on its menu? (What does it eat primarily? Is it a hunter, scavenger, or both?)
   • Who are its neighbors and potential threats? (What other animals share its habitat? What are its main predators?)
   • What are its superpowers? (List at least three special adaptations – physical traits or behaviors – that help it survive in its habitat. Think about its hearing, sense of smell, speed, diet flexibility, social structure, etc.)
   Encourage the student to take notes, draw sketches, or create a mini 'Jackal Fact File'.
3. Habitat Hotspot Brainstorm: Based on your research, list all the essential components your jackal needs in its habitat to live a successful life. Think about shelter from weather and predators, access to food and water, and open spaces or cover for hunting and hiding.

Part 2: Habitat Architect - Create a Jackal's Ideal Home! (Approx. 60-90 minutes)

Now that you're a jackal expert, it's time to use your creativity and knowledge! You will design and build a model (diorama) of a perfect habitat for the jackal species you researched.

1. Blueprint Your Design: On a piece of paper, sketch a simple plan for your jackal habitat diorama. Where will you place the den? What will the surrounding landscape look like (e.g., tall grasses, scattered bushes, rocky outcrops, a water source)? How will you show its food sources?
2. Construct Your Habitat:
   • Use your shoebox (or a similar-sized cardboard box) as the foundation for your diorama.
   • Use construction paper, paint, markers, or crayons to create the background (sky, distant landscape) and the ground cover (e.g., yellows and browns for savanna, greens for woodland edges).
   • Get creative making 3D elements! Use craft supplies like pipe cleaners for sparse trees, crumpled paper for rocks, or blue paper/cellophane for a waterhole. If available and safe, incorporate small natural elements like twigs, dry leaves, or a pinch of sand.
   • Make sure to include a den for your jackal. You can also create a small jackal figure from modeling clay, draw and cut one out, or use a small toy animal if you have one.
   • Remember to include features specific to your jackal's researched habitat!
3. Guided Habitat Tour: When your diorama is complete, give a 'guided tour.' Explain the different features of your habitat model and why each one is important for the jackal’s survival. During your tour, be sure to point out how at least three of the jackal's adaptations help it live successfully in the environment you've built.

Part 3: A Jackal's Diary - Creative Storytelling (Approx. 45-60 minutes)

Step into the paws of the jackal living in the wonderful habitat you just constructed! It’s time to tell its story.

1. Story Sparks: Imagine a typical day, or perhaps an unusual adventure, for your jackal. What challenges might it face (e.g., finding food, avoiding a predator, a change in weather)? What interesting encounters might it have? Is it a young jackal learning the ways of the world, or an experienced adult?
2. Pen Your Adventure: Write a short story (aim for 1-2 pages) from the first-person perspective of your jackal ('I sniffed the air...'). Describe its surroundings based on your diorama. Show how it uses its unique adaptations (e.g., 'My large ears swiveled, picking up the faint rustle of a mouse in the dry grass...'). Make your story engaging and true to what you've learned about jackals.
3. Share Your Tale: Read your story aloud, perhaps using your diorama as a visual aid!

Wrap-up & Reflection (Approx. 15-20 minutes)
