Today's Mission: Become Super Shape Detectives, Finley!

• Colored construction paper
• Child-safe scissors (ask a grown-up for help!)
• Crayons or markers
• Glue stick
• A small bag or basket (your evidence bag!)
• Optional: Pre-cut paper shapes, shape flashcards, or shape blocks

Let's Begin Our Adventure, Detective Finley!

Part 1: Meet the Shapes (Your Prime Suspects!) (10 minutes)

Hello, Detective Finley! Today, our top-secret mission is to find and learn about some sneaky shapes hiding all around us. Do you know these shapes? Let's review our suspects:

• Circle: It's perfectly round, like a happy sun, with no straight sides or corners, not even one! (Show a circle shape or draw one clearly.) Can you trace a big circle in the air?
• Square: It has four straight sides that are all the same length, and four pointy corners, showing its strength! (Show/draw a square.) Let's count its sides: 1, 2, 3, 4!
• Triangle: It has three straight sides and three pointy corners, like a slice of pizza or a tiny sail that adorns us! (Show/draw a triangle.) Can you make a triangle with your fingers?
• Rectangle: It has four straight sides too, but wait, there's a clue! Two sides are long, and two sides are short, with four corners to report! (Show/draw a rectangle.) It looks like a door or your favorite book!

Let's practice saying their names: Circle! Square! Triangle! Rectangle! Great job, Detective!

Part 2: The Great Shape Hunt! (15-20 minutes)

Okay, Detective Finley, grab your evidence bag! Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and I know you will!), is to explore our detective headquarters (your home or learning space!) and find at least TWO examples of each of our suspect shapes:

• Circles: Look for things like a plate, the face of a clock, a coin, or a button.
• Squares: Can you spot a game board tile, a small sticky note, a window pane, or a special cracker?
• Triangles: These can be tricky! Maybe a pattern on a toy, a musical triangle, or if you cut a square sandwich corner to corner!
• Rectangles: These are everywhere! Like a door, a big book, a tablet screen, or a sheet of paper.

When you find an object, proudly announce to your grown-up helper, "Aha! I found a [shape name]! This [object name] is a [shape name]!" You can gently place small items in your evidence bag or just point to bigger ones. Be a super careful and observant detective!

Part 3: Sorting the Evidence (10 minutes)

Brilliant detective work, Finley! Now, let's examine the clues you've gathered (or the things you pointed out). Let's sort them into groups by their shape. We can make a pile for circles, a pile for squares, a pile for triangles, and a pile for rectangles.

As you sort each item, tell your grown-up helper why it belongs in that group. For example, "This plate is a circle because it's round and has no corners." "This book is a rectangle because it has two long sides and two short sides."

Part 4: Creative Case File - My Shape Masterpiece! (15-20 minutes)

Now for the most creative part of our detective work! It's time to use your knowledge of shapes to build something amazing. Using your construction paper, scissors (with help if needed for tricky cuts!), glue, and markers, let's create a special picture. You could design:

• A Silly Shape Monster: What shape will its body be? Its eyes? Its funny hair?
• A Fantastic Shape Robot: Will it have square arms and circle buttons?
• A Cozy House Made of Shapes: A square house with a triangle roof and rectangle windows?
• A Colorful Shape Garden: Circle flowers with triangle leaves on rectangle stems?

Try to use at least one of each of our main suspect shapes: circle, square, triangle, and rectangle. As you choose and glue your shapes, talk about them! "I'm using this big red square for the robot's body, and these little blue circles will be its eyes!" This is your chance to be a shape artist!

Part 5: Case Closed! Detective Debrief! (5 minutes)

Wow, Detective Finley! Your shape masterpiece is incredible! This case is officially closed with amazing results! Can you present your creation to your grown-up helper and tell them all about the shapes you used? Which shape did you use the most? What's your favorite part of your creation and why?

You did an absolutely fantastic job today being a Shape Detective! You identified shapes, found them in the real world, sorted them like a pro, and used your creativity to make something new. You are a certified Shape Expert! High five, Detective Finley!
