Our 9-Week Sight Word Quest:
Week 1: The Super Starters!
New Words: I, a, am, the
Activities:
- Meet the Words: Write each word on a big flashcard. Say it, clap it, stomp it! Discuss what they mean.
- Word Hunt: Hide the flashcards around the room. Go on a hunt to find them! When you find one, shout it out and use it in a tiny phrase like "I see 'the'!".
- Playdough Words: Roll out playdough snakes and form the letters to make your new words. Say the word as you finish it.
- Sentence Fun: Let's make silly sentences! Start with prompts: "I am a..." (Finley fills in the blank with a noun). "The [object]...". Try to use all four words in different short sentences.
- My First Story Drawing: Draw a picture about yourself. Try to label something with "I" or "am." Tell a simple story about your picture using the new words.
Week 2: Action & Connection!
New Words: see, like, to, go
Review Words: I, a, am, the
Activities:
- Word Charades: Write the new words on slips of paper. Pick one and act it out (e.g., mime 'see' by pointing to eyes, 'go' by walking). Your grown-up guesses. Then switch roles! Try to use review words in your guesses or descriptions.
- Sight Word Spy in Books: Read a simple picture book together. Be a 'Sight Word Spy' and point out any new or review words you 'see'.
- Sentence Train: Start a sentence with a review word (e.g., "I") and add one of your new words ("I like..."). Keep adding words or new short sentences: "I like to go. I see a dog."
- Sight Word Hopscotch: Write words (new and review) on paper squares and make a hopscotch path indoors or outdoors. Say the word as you hop on it.
Week 3: Building Together!
New Words: and, we, can, is
Review Words: I, a, am, the, see, like, to, go
Activities:
- Word Detectives: Introduce new words using flashcards. Then, read a simple storybook together, and have Finley be a detective, pointing out when these new words appear.
- Magnetic Magic: Use magnetic letters on a fridge or baking sheet to build "and," "we," "can," "is." Say them as you build. Mix them up and build again!
- "We Can..." Chart: Create a chart titled "We Can...". Help Finley write or draw things "we can" do, using the word "can" and "we." For example: "We can play." "We can read." Try to incorporate "and" and "is": "This is fun and we can sing!"
- Sight Word Memory Game: Make pairs of flashcards (new words + some familiar review words) and play a memory matching game. When a match is made, say the word and try to use it in a sentence.
Week 4: Question & Place!
New Words: it, in, you, for
Review Words: All words from Weeks 1-3.
Activities:
- Mirror Talk: Use a mirror. Point to yourself: "This is ME." Point to Finley's reflection: "That is YOU!" Practice making sentences with "you." "I like you."
- Where is IT?: Play a hiding game with a small toy ("it"). Ask, "Where is it?" Encourage answers like, "It is IN the box." or "It is ON the table." Emphasize "it" and "in."
- Sensory Bin Search: Write words (new and review) on small pieces of paper or flat stones. Hide them in a sensory bin (rice, beans, pasta). Finley digs for them, reads them out, and perhaps sorts them (new vs. review).
- "For You" Craft: Make a simple card or drawing "for" someone special. Help Finley write a message using the new words, like "A flower for you. It is red."
Week 5: Story Time Words!
New Words: said, on, play, me
Review Words: All words from Weeks 1-4.
Activities:
- Puppet Show Dialogue: Use puppets (or stuffed animals). Have one puppet "said" something to the other. For example, Puppet 1: "Play with me!" Puppet 2: "Okay! My hat is on my head," said Puppet 2. Encourage Finley to make the puppets talk using the new words.
- Word Towers: Write new words and strong review words on building blocks or large LEGOs. Build towers, reading the words as you stack them. See how tall a tower you can make while reading all the words.
- "Said" Story Chain: Start a story with "The cat said..." Finley adds what the cat said, using the word "said." Take turns adding to the story, always using "said" when a character speaks.
- Sticker Scene Creation: Give Finley a piece of paper and some stickers. Create a scene. Then, using small labels or writing directly, use sight words to describe it: "The dog is ON the grass." "Play with ME." "The girl said hello."
Week 6: Describing Adventures!
New Words: big, little, run, look
Review Words: All words from Weeks 1-5.
Activities:
- Big & Little Hunt: Go around the house or yard and find BIG things and LITTLE things. When Finley finds one, encourage a sentence: "I see a BIG tree." "This is a LITTLE car." You can label some with sticky notes.
- "Look and Run!" Action Game: Write "look" on one card and "run" on another. When you hold up "look," Finley must point to something and say "Look! A [object]!" When you hold up "run," Finley can run on the spot or to a designated safe spot.
- Action Sentences: Combine new and review words to make action sentences. "I see a BIG dog run." "LOOK! The LITTLE cat can play." Write these down together.
- Drawing Opposites: Draw pairs of objects, one big and one little (e.g., a big ball and a little ball). Label them using "big" and "little" and other sight words: "Look, a big red ball."
Week 7: Making & Moving!
New Words: not, up, make, my
Review Words: All words from Weeks 1-6.
Activities:
- "Not That!" Sorting Game: Gather a few objects. Say, "I want the apple." Finley gives it. Then say, "I want something that is NOT red." Finley chooses an object that isn't red. Practice forming sentences with "not."
- Movement Words: Write "up" on a card. Practice actions: jump UP, reach UP. Use it in sentences: "My balloon goes UP." "Look UP at the sky."
- "Let's Make My..." Creation Station: Provide construction paper, crayons, glue, etc. Finley can make something (a collage, a drawing, a paper craft). Title it "My Creation." Encourage sentences like, "I will MAKE my car go UP. It is NOT blue, it is MY red car."
- Sight Word Obstacle Course: Set up a simple indoor obstacle course (pillows to climb, a tunnel to crawl through). Place sight word cards (new and review) at different points. Finley reads the word to perform an action (e.g., card says "up" - jump up; card says "my" - touch your nose).
Week 8: Colors & Numbers!
New Words: one, two, red, blue
Review Words: All words from Weeks 1-7.
Activities:
- Color & Number Scavenger Hunt: Call out: "Find ONE RED thing!" "Find TWO BLUE things!" Finley hunts for them and brings them back, saying, "I have ONE RED block." or "Here are TWO BLUE cars for you."
- Number & Color Art Project: Provide paper and crayons/paint. Instruct Finley to: "Draw ONE BIG RED circle." "Draw TWO LITTLE BLUE squares." Practice writing the words next to the drawings.
- Counting & Sentence Game: Use small objects (buttons, toys). "Show me ONE. Show me TWO." Then make sentences: "I see ONE red car AND TWO blue balls."
- Sight Word Fishing with a Twist: Attach paper clips to sight word fish (cutouts with words). Include number and color words. Make a fishing rod with a dowel, string, and magnet. Fish for words, read them, and then use them in a sentence related to numbers or colors if applicable (e.g., if Finley fishes "red," say "I like the red fish.").
Week 9: Sight Word Celebration!
New Words: yellow, three, find, funny
Review Words: All words from Weeks 1-8!
Activities:
- Rainbow Words & Sentences: Write the new words (yellow, three, find, funny) and some favorite review words using various colored markers, especially YELLOW. Then try to make sentences that include these words and colors/numbers: "I find THREE funny YELLOW hats."
- "Find the Funny" Picture Story: Draw a picture together with some silly/funny elements (e.g., a cat wearing shoes, a pig flying). Finley has to FIND the funny things and describe them using as many sight words as possible. "I find a funny pig. It is up in the sky!"
- Sight Word Super Story Creation: This is the grand finale! Collaboratively write (or Finley dictates and you scribe) a fantastic story using as many of the 36 learned sight words as possible. Finley can illustrate each page. This makes a great keepsake book.
- Sight Word Expert Bingo: Create Bingo cards with a grid of many learned sight words. Call out words, and Finley covers them if they are on the card. First to get a Bingo is the Sight Word Expert!
- Finley's Sight Word Superstar Certificate: Create and present a special, decorated certificate to Finley, celebrating all the hard work and learning as a Sight Word Superstar!
Remember, Finley, the most important thing throughout these 9 weeks is to have fun while learning! Ask questions, be creative, play lots, and celebrate every new word you learn. You're doing great!
