Peach-Perfect Adventures: Exploring James and the Giant Peach (Ch. 23-26)

Hi Emmett! Get ready for an exciting journey as we explore what happens to James and his friends in Chapters 23-26 of "James and the Giant Peach." They've landed in the ocean, and now the real adventure begins!

Let's Get Started! (Warm-up)

Before we dive in, can you remember what happened right before Chapter 23? Where did the peach end up after rolling through the village and off the cliffs? (Pause for Emmett's answer: In the Atlantic Ocean!)

Today, we'll read (or re-read) Chapters 23, 24, 25, and 26. Pay close attention to the problems they face and how they try to solve them!

Activity 1: Shark Alert! Creative Solutions

In Chapter 23, the peach is surrounded by hungry sharks! James comes up with a clever plan using the silkworm, earthworm, and seagulls.

Your Challenge:

  • Imagine you were on the peach. Besides using seagulls, can you think of two other creative ways James and his friends could have escaped the sharks or protected the peach?
  • Think about the characters' special abilities (Centipede's boots, Glow-worm's light, Ladybug's spots, etc.) or things they might find on the peach.
  • Draw or write about your ideas! Explain how your solutions would work.

Activity 2: Sky-High News Report!

In Chapters 24 and 25, James successfully harnesses hundreds of seagulls to lift the giant peach into the air! Can you imagine how astonishing that would look?

Your Challenge:

  • You are a news reporter who has just spotted a giant peach flying through the sky, carried by seagulls!
  • Create a short news report (you can write it down, or prepare to deliver it orally).
  • What would your headline be? ("Giant Fruit Flies Over Atlantic!" or "Mysterious Peach Airship Stuns Onlookers!")
  • What would you say? Describe what you see, interview an "eyewitness" (maybe a confused fisherman!), and speculate on where the peach might be going. Make it exciting!

Activity 3: A Bug's Diary

Think about how the different characters might have felt during these chapters – being stuck on the ocean, attacked by sharks, and then suddenly flying through the air!

Your Challenge:

  • Choose one character from the story (James, Centipede, Miss Spider, Earthworm, Ladybug, Old Green Grasshopper, Silkworm, or Glow-worm).
  • Write a short diary entry from their perspective, describing the events of Chapters 23-26 and how they felt.
  • For example, what would the pessimistic Earthworm be thinking? Or the boastful Centipede?

Activity 4: Designing for the Cloud-Men

In Chapter 26, the travelers in the peach float up into the clouds and encounter mysterious "Cloud-Men." James is curious about them.

Your Challenge:

  • Imagine James wants to learn more about the Cloud-Men without scaring them or getting into danger.
  • Design a special, friendly invention or contraption that could help James observe, communicate with, or perhaps even offer a friendly gift to a Cloud-Man.
  • Draw your invention. Label its parts and explain how it works. Think about what materials from the peach or their journey they might use to build it. Be creative!

Wrap-up and Sharing

Great job, Emmett! Which activity did you enjoy the most? Let's share what you created:

  • Tell me about your creative solutions for the shark attack.
  • Let's hear (or read) your amazing news report!
  • Share the diary entry from your chosen character.
  • Show me your fantastic Cloud-Man invention design!
