Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and recognize the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds.

Materials and Prep

  • Alphabet flashcards or letter magnets
  • Whiteboard or large piece of paper
  • Markers or crayons

Activities

  1. Introduction: Begin the lesson by showing the student the alphabet flashcards or letter magnets. Ask them if they can identify any of the letters. Encourage them to say the letter names and sounds.
  2. Letter Hunt: Spread out the flashcards or magnets on a table or the floor. Ask the student to find a specific letter and bring it to you. Repeat this activity with different letters, gradually increasing the difficulty.
  3. Alphabet Chart: Draw a large alphabet chart on the whiteboard or paper. Fill in a few letters and their corresponding pictures. Have the student take turns filling in the remaining letters and drawing pictures for them.
  4. Letter Sounds: Choose a letter and ask the student to say its sound. Encourage them to come up with words that start with that letter sound. Repeat with different letters.
  5. Letter Matching: Write a few uppercase letters on the whiteboard or paper. Give the student a set of lowercase letter flashcards or magnets and ask them to match the lowercase letters to their uppercase counterparts.
  6. Letter Tracing: Provide the student with a sheet of paper and markers or crayons. Ask them to choose a letter and trace it on the paper. Encourage them to say the letter name and sound as they trace.
