Amazing A Adventure!

Materials needed (official list in 'materials' section): Access to ABC Mouse, computer/tablet. Optional: paper & crayons.

Time: 25 minutes

Focus: Introduction to the letter 'A' (uppercase and lowercase), its sound, and words that begin with 'A'.

Warm-up & Introduction (5 minutes)

Teacher: "Hello! Are you ready for a letter adventure today? We're going to meet the very first letter of the alphabet! Do you know what it is? (Pause for student to guess or respond). That's right (or, 'It's...') the letter A!"

Teacher: (Show a visual of 'A' and 'a'. You can prepare this beforehand or quickly draw it). "This is uppercase A (point to 'A') and this is lowercase a (point to 'a'). They look a little different, but they are both the letter A, and they make the same sound!"

Teacher: "The letter A makes the sound /ă/ like in apple, alligator, and ant. Let's make the sound together: /ă/, /ă/, /ă/. Great job!"

ABC Mouse Exploration (15 minutes)

Teacher: "Now, let's hop onto ABC Mouse to see what fun things we can find about the letter A! Are you ready?" (Log in to ABC Mouse).

Suggested ABC Mouse Activities (choose one or two based on time and student interest):

  • Navigate to the "Learn the Letter A" section, often found in the "Alphabet" or "Reading" curriculum path.
  • Play a letter A song or watch an animation. Teacher: "Let's listen to this song about 'A'. Listen for words that start with the /ă/ sound!" After the song, ask: "What words did you hear that start with A?"
  • Engage in an interactive game that focuses on identifying or tracing the letter A. Teacher: "Look! This game helps us find the letter A. Can you help me click on all the letter A's you see?" or "Let's try to trace the letter A on the screen together!"
  • Read a short e-book or story that heavily features the letter A. Teacher: "As we read this story, point to the letter A whenever you see it on the page."

Teacher: (During ABC Mouse activities) "Wow, you found an A! What sound does A make? That's right, /ă/! Look, 'astronaut' starts with A!" (Provide encouragement and interact with the student throughout the online activities).

Creative 'A' Wrap-up (5 minutes)

Teacher: "You did such a super job exploring the letter A on ABC Mouse! Now, for a quick, fun challenge: Can you look around you and find something that starts with the letter A? Or think of an animal that starts with A?" (Examples: apple, ant, alligator, armchair. Help if needed.)

Teacher: (Optional activity if time permits and materials are ready) "Let's try to draw a big uppercase 'A' and a small lowercase 'a' on your paper. Or, you can tell me something you want to draw that starts with 'A', like an apple!" (Encourage creativity rather than perfect formation at this stage).

Teacher: "Fantastic! You are an 'A' superstar today! What letter did we learn about? (A!) And what sound does it make? (/ă/!) Give yourself an 'Awesome A' cheer!"
