Lesson: Be a Helper Star!

Materials Needed

  • Black or dark blue construction paper (1 large piece for a chart, 1 smaller piece for a craft)
  • Yellow or glittery paper/craft foam
  • Star-shaped cookie cutter or a printed star template to trace
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Non-toxic glue stick or craft glue
  • Glitter, glitter glue, or shiny stickers (optional, for decorating)
  • A popsicle stick, straw, or a real stick from outside
  • A small bin or tray for sensory play
  • Uncooked rice or pasta, dyed black or blue (optional, can use plain)
  • Small star-shaped beads, buttons, or cutouts (for the sensory bin)
  • A flashlight (optional)

Lesson Plan & Activities

1. The Sparkle Starter (Introduction - 5 minutes)

Goal: To capture interest and introduce the theme of stars.

  • Sit with your child in a comfortable spot. Begin by dimming the lights slightly if possible.
  • Start singing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" softly. Use gentle hand motions: open and close your fingers for "twinkle," and point up high for "up above the world so high." Encourage your child to sing and do the motions with you.
  • After the song, say in an excited, wondrous voice: "What was our song about? Stars! Stars have a very important job. They shine their light in the dark sky to help us see and to make the night beautiful. They are big helpers!"

2. We Are Little Stars (Main Activity - 10-15 minutes)

Goal: To connect the child to the star concept through a hands-on craft.

Activity: Make a Star Wand

  1. Prepare the Star: Ahead of time, trace and cut out a large star shape from the yellow or glittery paper.
  2. Decorate: Give the star cutout to your child. Say, "Let's make our very own star! You can make it shine." Let them decorate it with glitter glue or shiny stickers. This is great for fine motor skill practice. Talk about how they are making the star bright and special.
  3. Assemble the Wand: Help your child put glue on the end of the popsicle stick and press it onto the back of the star. Let it dry for a moment.
  4. Practice Shining: Once the wand is ready, say, "You have a star! Just like the star in the sky, your star can shine! Let's fly it around and twinkle, twinkle, twinkle!" Let them wave their wand as you sing the song again.

3. Shining with Kindness (Moral Application - 10 minutes)

Goal: To introduce the moral lesson that people, like stars, can "shine" by being helpers.

Activity A: The "Helper Star" Chart

  1. Take out the large piece of dark construction paper. Say, "This is our night sky. It's so dark! It needs some helper stars."
  2. Explain in simple terms: "You know how the star's job is to shine in the dark? Our job is to be helpers! When we help, we are shining our light and making the world a happier place. We can be a 'Helper Star'!"
  3. Ask your child to do a simple helpful task. For example, "Can you please help me by putting your toy car back in the bin?"
  4. When they complete the task, cheer for them! "Yay! You were a Helper Star! You get to put a star in our night sky!" Have a pre-cut paper star or a shiny star sticker ready for them to place on the black paper.
  5. Keep this chart visible throughout the day or week. Each time they do something helpful (share a toy, help clean up, use kind hands), acknowledge it and let them add a star to the chart.

Activity B: Night Sky Sensory Bin

  1. Present the sensory bin filled with dark-colored rice/pasta and small star shapes.
  2. Say, "Let's find all the little stars hiding in the night sky!"
  3. As you play, you can scoop, pour, and search for stars. Reinforce the lesson by saying things like, "Look! You found a star! It shines so bright," and "All these stars are helpers, just like you."

4. Twinkle Goodbye (Conclusion - 5 minutes)

Goal: To summarize the lesson in a calm and positive way.

  • Gather together again, holding the star wand.
  • Turn the lights down low and use the flashlight to make a "star" on the ceiling. Move it around as you talk.
  • Say, "Look at the little star. It works so hard to shine its light. You were a Helper Star today when you... (mention the specific helpful act)."
  • Sing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" one last time, very softly. End with a hug and say, "Remember to always be a little star and shine your light by helping others."

Extension Ideas (For another day)

  • Star Gazing: If it's a clear night, take your child outside to look for the moon and real stars.
  • Shape Hunt: Go on a "star hunt" around the house, looking for star shapes on clothing, books, or toys.
  • Read a Book: Find a picture book about stars or kindness, like "How to Catch a Star" by Oliver Jeffers or "A Sick Day for Amos McGee" by Philip C. Stead.

Teacher Notes on Development

  • Social-Emotional: This lesson introduces the concepts of purpose (a star's "job") and prosocial behavior (helping others). The chart provides positive reinforcement for kindness and responsibility.
  • Fine Motor: Using stickers, glue sticks, and picking up small stars in the sensory bin helps strengthen hand-eye coordination and pincer grasp.
  • Language: Singing, repetition, and introducing new vocabulary ("shine," "helper," "wonder") builds language skills. The lesson encourages conversation and listening.
  • Cognitive: This lesson uses symbolism (a star's light = helping) in a very simple, concrete way that a toddler can begin to grasp through action and repetition.
