Kindergarten Reading: Week 25 - The Super Bug Adventure!
Materials Needed
- Paper (construction paper or plain white)
- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
- Index cards or small pieces of paper
- A fly swatter (or Finley can use his hand)
- Scissors and tape/glue stick
- A simple, pre-made story (provided below)
- A pencil
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, Finley will be able to:
- Read CVC Words: Confidently blend and read CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) words with the short 'u' sound (e.g., bug, run, mud, sun).
- Identify Sight Words: Recognize and read the new sight words "he," "was," and "for" in sentences.
- Demonstrate Comprehension: Retell a simple story by creating a 3-panel comic strip that shows the beginning, middle, and end.
Lesson Plan: Step-by-Step
Part 1: Warm-Up - CVC Bug Swat! (10 minutes)
Goal: To practice reading short 'u' CVC words in a fun, physical way.
- Preparation: Write the following short 'u' words on separate index cards or pieces of paper: bug, run, sun, mud, cup, hug, tub, fun. Draw a simple bug shape around each word.
- Activity: Spread the "word bugs" out on the floor or a table.
- Instructions: "Finley, we have some word bugs invading our learning space! Your job is to be the Word Swatter. I'll call out a word, and you have to find it and SWAT it with your fly swatter. But before you swat it, you have to read the word out loud to make sure it's the right one!"
- Play: Call out the words one at a time. Encourage Finley to sound out the letters if he gets stuck (e.g., "/b/ /u/ /g/... bug!"). Cheer for each correct swat!
Part 2: Sight Word Superheroes (10 minutes)
Goal: To introduce and practice the new sight words "he," "was," and "for."
- Preparation: Write each sight word on its own index card: he, was, for.
- Introduction: Show Finley the card for "he." "This is a new sight word superhero! Its name is 'he'. We use it to talk about a boy or a man. Let's give it a superhero action!" (Example: a strong man pose). Practice the word and the pose.
- Repeat: Introduce "was" (past tense action, like pointing behind you) and "for" (giving action, like holding out your hands). Practice all three words with their actions.
- Sight Word Hunt: Hide the three sight word cards around the room. Say, "I need a superhero to find the word 'was'!" Finley can run to find the card, bring it back, and do the action. Repeat for all words until he can find them quickly.
Part 3: Reading Adventure - "A Bug for a Pal" (10 minutes)
Goal: To read a simple story together, practicing fluency and spotting the new sight words.
- Preparation: Write or print the following short story on a piece of paper. Use large, clear letters.
- Story Text:
A big bug sat in the sun. He was hot.
A kid had a red cup. He ran up to the bug.
The kid had a sip for the bug. It was fun!
- Shared Reading: Read the story to Finley first, pointing to each word. Then, read it together. When you get to one of the new sight words (he, was, for) or a CVC "bug word" from the warm-up, have him point to it.
- Quick Check: Ask simple questions to check for understanding. "Who was hot?" (The bug). "What did the kid have for the bug?" (A sip from the cup).
Part 4: Creative Comprehension - Comic Strip Retell (15 minutes)
Goal: To assess Finley's understanding of the story sequence through a creative, hands-on project.
- Preparation: Fold a piece of paper into three sections (panels). Number them 1, 2, and 3.
- Instructions: "Finley, you are now a famous comic book artist! Your job is to retell the story 'A Bug for a Pal' in this three-panel comic.
- In panel #1, draw what happened at the beginning of the story. (The hot bug in the sun).
- In panel #2, draw what happened in the middle. (The kid running with the cup).
- In panel #3, draw what happened at the end. (The bug getting a sip).
- Create: Give Finley the markers and crayons. As he draws, talk with him about what he's creating. "Tell me about this picture. What's happening here?"
- Add Words (Optional Challenge): Encourage him to label his pictures or even try to write one of the sight words or CVC words in his comic. For example, he could write "sun" in the first panel or "bug" next to the bug. You can write the words for him to copy.
Assessment & Feedback
Your main assessment tool is observing Finley's participation and looking at his final comic strip.
- CVC Words: Did Finley read most of the 'bug words' correctly during the swatting game? (Aiming for about 6 out of 8).
- Sight Words: Could he identify the new sight words ("he," "was," "for") during the reading and the hunt?
- Comprehension: Does his comic strip show a clear beginning, middle, and end that accurately reflects the story? Give specific, positive feedback: "I love how you drew the big yellow sun to show the bug was hot! That was the perfect start to our story."
Differentiation and Scaffolding
- For Extra Support:
- In the CVC game, start with only 3-4 words.
- During the comic activity, you can draw the basic shapes for him (e.g., a circle for the sun, a stick figure for the kid) and he can add the details.
- Verbally tell him what to draw for each panel one step at a time.
- For an Extra Challenge:
- Ask Finley to write a full sentence or caption under each panel of his comic.
- Have him create a fourth panel showing what might happen next in the story.
- Introduce more complex short 'u' words like "jump" or "plus" into the swatting game.
