Materials Needed:

  • A large collection of Duplo blocks in various shapes and sizes.
  • A flat, open space to build on (a rug or play mat is perfect).

  • Optional: Picture book about castles.

Lesson Details

Students: Oliver, Mila, Reggie (Age 2)

Focus Areas: Fine Motor Skills, Creative Expression, Language Development, Social-Emotional Learning (collaboration, turn-taking), Early Math Concepts (sorting, stacking, height).

1. Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, Oliver, Mila, and Reggie will be able to:

  • Stack at least 3-4 Duplo blocks independently to build a tower or wall.
  • Use new vocabulary words like "castle," "tower," and "tall" in context with prompting.
  • Engage in cooperative play by sharing blocks and building space with gentle reminders.
  • Express creativity by making their own unique additions to the group castle.

2. Lesson Procedure (Step-by-Step)

Part 1: The Royal Welcome (5 Minutes)

  1. Gather the Builders: Invite Oliver, Mila, and Reggie to the building area. Sit in a circle with the Duplo blocks in the middle, but not yet accessible.
  2. Sing a Castle Song: Get them excited with a simple, interactive song to the tune of "The Wheels on the Bus."
"The blocks in the castle go stack, stack, stack..." (Pretend to stack hands)
"The queen in the castle waves hi, hi, hi..." (Wave like royalty)
"The knight in the castle stands big and tall..." (Stand up tall and puff out chest)
  3. Introduce the Goal: Say with excitement, "Today, we are all going to be royal builders! We need to build a big, strong Duplo castle for our friends (show Duplo figures)."

Part 2: The Castle Challenge (15-20 Minutes)

  1. Model the Basics (I Do): "First, I'm going to build a tower. I'll take one big block, and then a small block on top. Look! A tall tower." Build a simple 3-block tower to demonstrate.
  2. Guided Building (We Do): "Let's all build a wall together! Mila, can you find a long, green block? Great! Reggie, can you put a yellow block next to it? Oliver, let's add a red one here. Look at our strong wall!"
  3. Creative Exploration (You Do): Announce, "Now it’s your turn to be the master builders! Let's build the best castle ever." Tip the bin of Duplos into the center and allow for free-form building. Sit with them and facilitate, but don't direct.
    • Ask open-ended questions: "Oliver, what are you building?" "Mila, that's a very tall tower! How many blocks did you use?" "Reggie, does our castle need a door?"
    • Encourage collaboration: "Mila has a great tower! Maybe Oliver can build a wall to connect to it?"

Part 3: The Dragon's Visit & Castle Tour (5 Minutes)

  1. Introduce the "Dragon": Bring out the friendly soft-toy dragon. "Oh look! A friendly dragon has come to visit our castle! Is our castle strong enough?" Gently have the dragon "knock" on a wall. "Hooray! It's so strong!"
  2. Celebrate the Creation: Give each child a turn to show off their favorite part of the castle. "Reggie, tell us about this part you built." "Mila, I love the colors you used here." "Oliver, can you show the dragon where the king lives?"
  3. Clean-Up Game: "The king and queen have declared it's time to put the royal blocks away!" Turn clean-up into a game by sorting blocks by color into piles before putting them back in the bin.

3. Differentiation and Inclusivity

  • For a child needing more support:
    • Provide larger, 2x4 Duplo blocks which are more stable and easier to handle.
    • Focus on building horizontally (making "roads" or "fences") rather than vertically if stacking is frustrating.
    • Use hand-over-hand guidance to help them feel the motion of connecting two blocks.
  • For a child ready for a challenge:
    • Ask them to build a pattern with colors (red, blue, red, blue).
    • Challenge them to build something specific: "Can you build a bridge for the knight to cross?" or "Can you make an archway for the door?"
    • Encourage them to tell a story about what is happening in the castle they built.

4. Assessment (Informal Observation)

During the lesson, watch for:

  • Fine Motor: Are they able to successfully grasp and connect blocks? Can they stack them vertically?
  • Language: Do they respond to or try to use words like "tower," "block," "tall," or "castle"?
  • Social Skills: Are they able to share the space? Do they respond to prompts to share a specific block?
  • Engagement: Are they focused on the task? Are they showing excitement or pride in what they have built?
