Lesson Plan: Almanzo's Farm Life Vocabulary

Materials Needed:

  • The book Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder
  • Several sheets of paper (or a small notebook)
  • Pencils, colored pencils, or markers
  • Scissors and glue (optional)
  • A small box or bag (to be the "Time Traveler's Trunk")
  • Index cards with the following vocabulary words written on them: keen, thresh, stanchions, bellows, fodder, tallow, cobbler, yoke
  • (Optional) Pictures representing the vocabulary words (e.g., a picture of a yoke, a candle, hay, etc.)

Subject: English Language Arts, Vocabulary Building

Grade Level: 3rd Grade (Age 8)

Student: Kiddo 1

Time Allotment: 60 Minutes

1. Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, Kiddo 1 will be able to:

  • Define at least 6 of the 8 target vocabulary words in their own words.
  • Correctly use at least 4 of the target vocabulary words in a creative writing or drawing activity.
  • Explain how the vocabulary words connect to life on a 19th-century farm, as depicted in Farmer Boy.

2. Curriculum Alignment (3rd Grade ELA)

  • Vocabulary Acquisition and Use: Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 3 topic. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.4)
  • Reading Comprehension: Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.3)
  • Writing: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.3)

3. Lesson Activities & Instructional Strategies

Part 1: The Time Traveler's Trunk (10 minutes - Engagement)

  1. Introduction: Present the small box as a "Time Traveler's Trunk" you've just discovered from Almanzo Wilder's time. Say, "I think there are some important items and words from Almanzo's life in here! Let's see if we can figure out what they are and what they were used for."
  2. Word Exploration: Have Kiddo 1 pull one vocabulary card (and a matching picture, if using) out of the trunk at a time. As each word is revealed:
    • Read the word aloud together.
    • Ask Kiddo 1 if they remember hearing it in Farmer Boy. Find the word in the book if possible and read the sentence it's in.
    • Provide a clear, simple definition. For example: "A yoke is like a special wooden collar for two oxen so they can pull a plow together. It helps them work as a team."
    • Do a quick, active engagement with the word. For example:
      • Keen: "What are you keen to do today?"
      • Thresh: Mime the action of hitting wheat stalks to get the grains out.
      • Bellows: Pretend to squeeze bellows to make a fire hotter.
      • Stanchions: Use your hands to show how stanchions would lock around a cow's neck.

Part 2: Creating "Almanzo's Almanac" (35 minutes - Application & Creativity)

Tell Kiddo 1 that they will now create a few pages for their very own "Farmer's Almanac" or Farm Journal, just like one Almanzo might have kept. Provide the paper/notebook and drawing supplies.

  1. Page 1: A Farmer's Chores.
    • Task: Instruct Kiddo 1 to write 2-3 sentences about the daily chores on the Wilder farm. They must use at least two vocabulary words.
    • Example prompt: "Write about feeding the cows and getting them settled for the night."
    • Example sentence: "Father put fresh fodder in the trough, and I made sure the cows were secure in their stanchions."
  2. Page 2: The Farm Workshop.
    • Task: Ask Kiddo 1 to draw a picture of a barn, a workshop, or the kitchen. They must draw and label at least three items that use our vocabulary words.
    • Example prompt: "Draw a picture of the tools Almanzo's father might use or things his mother might make."
    • Example labels: Point an arrow to a drawing of a wooden collar labeled "Yoke," a candle labeled "Tallow candle," or a tool by the fireplace labeled "Bellows."
  3. Page 3: A Farmer's Story.
    • Task: Ask Kiddo 1 to write a very short story (3-4 sentences) from the perspective of Almanzo. They should describe something exciting happening on the farm, using the word keen and at least one other vocabulary word.
    • Example prompt: "Pretend you are Almanzo. Write about helping your father with a big job."
    • Example story: "I was keen to help Father today. We are going to thresh the wheat. It is hard work, but I love the sound the machine makes."

Part 3: Almanac Showcase & Review (10 minutes - Assessment & Closure)

  1. Share and Explain: Have Kiddo 1 "showcase" their almanac. Ask them to read their sentences and explain their drawings.
  2. Check for Understanding: As they present, ask clarifying questions to assess their understanding.
    • "Why would a farmer need a yoke?"
    • "What does it mean that Almanzo was 'keen' to help?"
    • "Show me the part of your drawing that is the bellows. What does it do?"
  3. Praise and Connect: Praise the creative work and effort. Conclude by saying, "You did an amazing job understanding what life was like for Almanzo. These words help his story come to life!"

4. Differentiation and Inclusivity

  • For Extra Support:
    • Focus on 4-5 words instead of all 8.
    • Provide sentence starters for the writing activities (e.g., "The cows eat...").
    • Allow Kiddo 1 to dictate their sentences while you write them down.
    • Use the pre-printed pictures for them to glue into their almanac and label, rather than drawing from scratch.
  • For an Extra Challenge:
    • Challenge Kiddo 1 to use all 8 vocabulary words throughout their almanac.
    • Ask them to write a full-page story or a descriptive paragraph instead of just a few sentences.
    • Have them design a new invention for the farm and write a description of it using some of the new vocabulary.

5. Assessment Methods

  • Formative (Ongoing): Observe Kiddo 1's participation and responses during the "Time Traveler's Trunk" activity. Note their ability to make connections and act out the words.
  • Summative (Creative Product): The "Almanzo's Almanac" serves as the primary assessment. Review the almanac pages for:
    • Correct Usage: Are the vocabulary words used correctly in the context of sentences?
    • Conceptual Understanding: Do the drawings and labels accurately represent the meaning of the words?
    • Verbal Explanation: Can Kiddo 1 explain the meaning of the words they used during the "Almanac Showcase"?

6. Extension Activity (Optional)

Make Your Own Tallow Candles: For a hands-on connection, research and (with supervision) create simple candles using a modern kit or by melting down old candle wax. Discuss how Almanzo's family would have used animal fat (tallow) to do the same thing for their light source.
