Pioneer Word Adventure: By the Shores of Silver Lake
Materials Needed
- A copy of By the Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder
- Index cards or small slips of paper
- Pencils and markers or crayons
- A large sheet of paper or a small poster board
- Optional: A dictionary (book or online)
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, Kiddo 1 will be able to:
- Define 5-6 key vocabulary words from the book in their own words.
- Demonstrate understanding of the words by acting them out or drawing them.
- Apply the vocabulary words by using them correctly in a creative drawing and labeling activity.
- Connect the new vocabulary to the historical setting of the Ingalls family's life on the prairie.
Selected Vocabulary Words
This lesson focuses on words that describe the new life and challenges the Ingalls family faced. Write each word on a separate index card.
- Surveyor: A person whose job is to measure land for things like towns and railroads.
- Shanty: A very small, simply built house or hut.
- Trestle: A special kind of bridge made from a frame of wood or steel, used to support a railroad track across a valley.
- Desolate: A place that looks empty, bare, and lonely.
- Homestead: A piece of land given by the government to a family who agreed to live on it and farm it.
- Ague: An illness, like malaria, that gives you a high fever and chills.
Lesson Activities (Approx. 45-60 minutes)
Part 1: Word Detectives (10 minutes)
- Introduce the Mission: "Today, we're going on a word adventure! We're going to be word detectives and uncover the secret meanings of some special words Laura used in By the Shores of Silver Lake."
- Go on a Word Hunt: Give Kiddo 1 the stack of vocabulary cards. Challenge them to be a "word detective" and find each word in the book. As they find a word, read the sentence or paragraph where it appears.
- Discuss the Clues: After reading the sentence, ask, "Based on how Laura uses the word, what do you think it might mean?" Discuss their ideas before sharing the simple definition from the list above. This helps build context-clue skills.
Part 2: Pioneer Word Charades & Pictionary (15 minutes)
- Get Ready to Act: Shuffle the vocabulary cards and place them face down.
- Play the Game: Kiddo 1 draws a card. They must either act out the word (charades) or draw it (Pictionary) for you to guess. This is a fun, active way to check for understanding.
- Example for Trestle: They could draw a train track going over a series of A-frame shapes.
- Example for Ague: They could pretend to shiver and then feel hot.
- Example for Surveyor: They could pretend to look through a special tool and measure the land.
- Take Turns: Play a few rounds, taking turns drawing/acting and guessing. Laughs are encouraged!
Part 3: Create Your Silver Lake Scene (20 minutes)
- Set the Scene: "Now you get to be the artist! Your job is to draw a big picture inspired by By the Shores of Silver Lake. It can be the railroad camp, the surveyor's house, or the spot where Pa wants to build his homestead."
- The Creative Challenge: "As you draw, you must include and label at least FOUR of our new vocabulary words in your picture."
- Let's Draw: On the large piece of paper, Kiddo 1 creates their scene.
- They might draw the railroad tracks being built on a high trestle.
- They could draw the little shanty the family first lived in.
- They could draw a surveyor looking at a map.
- They could draw the wide, open land and label it "desolate prairie."
- They could draw a sign on a piece of land that says, "Pa's future homestead."
Wrap-Up & Assessment (5 minutes)
Ask Kiddo 1 to be a tour guide and present their "Silver Lake Scene." Have them point to each labeled item and explain what it is and why it was important in the story. This serves as a creative and low-pressure way to assess their understanding and application of the words.
Example questions: "Tell me about this shanty. What was it like?" or "Why did the railroad need a trestle here?"
Differentiation (Ways to Adapt)
For Extra Support:
- Reduce the number of vocabulary words to 3 or 4.
- Work together to find the words in the book and create the drawing.
- Offer to write the labels on the drawing as Kiddo 1 points to where they should go.
- Look up pictures online of a real trestle bridge or pioneer shanty to provide a clear visual.
For an Extra Challenge:
- Have Kiddo 1 write 2-3 sentences on the back of the drawing, like a postcard from Laura, using some of the vocabulary words.
- Challenge them to find 2-3 *more* interesting words from the book, look them up, and add them to the drawing.
- Instead of a drawing, create a 3D diorama of the scene using a shoebox, craft sticks (for the trestle), clay, and other craft supplies.
