2. Alignment with Standards (Example: Common Core ELA, Grade 5-6)

- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.3.D: Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.
3. Lesson Sequence & Instructional Strategies
Part 1: The Word Smith's Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Strategy: Gamification & Direct Instruction
- Instructions:
- Introduce the "Vivid Vocabulary" list for today. Explain that these are powerful words authors use to make characters and stories more interesting. Today’s theme is words related to wisdom and personality, inspired by his name, Foresight.
Vivid Vocabulary List:- Sagacious (wise, showing good judgment)
- Meticulous (very careful and precise)
- Formidable (inspiring fear or respect through being impressively large or powerful)
- Benevolent (well-meaning and kind)
- Ambiguous (unclear or having more than one possible meaning)
- Resilient (able to recover quickly from difficulties)
- Ethereal (extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world)
- Go over the pronunciation and meaning of each word together. Use the dictionary for any clarifications.
- Spelling Challenge: Ask Foresight to spell each word aloud. For any tricky ones, practice writing them down three times while saying the letters.

Part 2: The Character Forge (25 minutes)
- Strategy: Creative Application & Project-Based Learning
- Instructions:
- The Task: "Today, you are a world-builder, and your first task is to create a brand-new character. This character’s name is Foresight. Is he a hero, a villain, a wise old mentor, or a mysterious stranger? That's up to you!"
- The Rules:
- Create a character profile for "Foresight."
- The profile must include: a physical description, a personality description, a special skill or power, and a brief backstory (where did they come from?).
- You must use at least five of the "Vivid Vocabulary" words in your description. Underline the vocabulary words you use.
- You can (and should!) draw a portrait of your character next to the profile.
- Give Foresight the paper, writing tools, and creative freedom to work. Be available for questions or to help brainstorm ideas.
Part 3: The Reading Detective (15 minutes)
- Strategy: Analytical Reading & Text-to-Self Connection
- Instructions:
- Ask Foresight to open his chosen book to a page that introduces a character or describes a main character.
- The Mission: "You're now a Reading Detective. Read the page and find 2-3 powerful words the author used to show you what the character is like. How did the author's word choice make you feel about that character?"
- Discuss his findings. Compare the author’s words to the "Vivid Vocabulary" list. Did the author use any similar words or ideas? This connects the creative writing exercise to the work of professional authors.
Part 4: Showcase and Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Strategy: Oral Presentation & Reflection
- Instructions:
- Invite Foresight to present his character, "Foresight." He should read his profile aloud and show his drawing.
- Ask reflective questions: "Why did you choose the word 'formidable' to describe his appearance? How does being 'meticulous' help him with his special power?"
- Praise his creativity and his excellent use of the new words, connecting his work back to the learning objectives.
4. Differentiation and Inclusivity
- For Extra Support: Provide sentence starters for the character profile (e.g., "His most notable trait was his _______ nature."). Reduce the required number of vocabulary words to three.
- For an Extra Challenge (Extension): Ask Foresight to write a short, one-paragraph scene where his new character must use their special skill. Encourage him to use two additional vocabulary words from the list in the scene.
- Inclusivity: By allowing Foresight to design the character (hero, villain, gender, background), the activity is inherently inclusive and gives him ownership over the creative process. The choice of reading material is also his own.
5. Assessment Methods
- Formative (Ongoing):
- Observing his participation in the warm-up spelling and definition game.
